Looking to upgrade to an EL, need the room. Is the above a good deal? Just drove by it tonight and stopped by and looked at it. Looks clean at first glance, and at night, lol.
It's 4x4, buckets seats second row.

NO

Bought a '12 Gator L 4x4 w/ 130k (close enough mileage, same year, Navigator L = essentially same truck, top trim level of Expedition EL) last May for $13k

A good price here would be...11k, maybe 12k. 13k okayish, 14k overpriced max

I agree, check Nada, or Kelly blue book. Compare on Craig's list, eBay's a bit high. Their trying to get way above retail. You've got a lot of bargain room if they want to sell. Private Party's are a better deal. No inflated prices like car lots.

You can't really compare prices between markets as supply/demand (and thus the fair market price) can vary significantly between markets. In Texas, for example, there seems to be a huge surplus of Expeditions and most are rust-free for many years. In much of the northeast, however, there seem to be far fewer Expeditions, especially if you're looking for something that hasn't succumbed to the megatons of salt poured on the roads every winter. When you get into ELs, the selection dwindles even further. Add in a luxury trim (eg Limited) and demand goes up because us northerners are suckers for creature comforts. :p Consequently, a clean EL here in the northeast will still fetch a premium. Auctions, of course, are an entirely different animal. If you're confident that you can handle any and all issues that an auction vehicle may present - or the price is good enough that you would even be ok paying someone else to handle said issues - then that's an avenue to explore.

All of that said, I plugged that vehicle's info into NADA along with your dealer's zip code and he's flat out asking too much. I usually aim somewhere between clean trade-in and retail if buying from a dealer with my target price dependent on what I'm getting for my money. Are there new tires, brakes, etc. on it? Is there a warranty of some kind and what does it include? Have they refinished the wheels and done a full detail that included the removal of all noticeable scratches? In short, you're paying that dealer premium to save yourself the time/money of doing these things on your own. Make sure you're getting some value for that spend.

If the difference is 6 or 7 grand AND a rust-free truck, it might be worth a detour to Texas

I paid almost $30k for my '14 limited with 70k miles just about a year ago. It was in pristine condition.

I'm in the NE, and I too had trouble finding what I wanted in the EL around here. I finally found my clean '14 EL Limited w/80K at a dealer just south of me. They wanted 25,700, and I told my goal was 25 out the door after paying our NY taxes. They worked with me and made it happen, even dropped it another $600 as it needed new tires. I got mine for 22K and it did work out to about 25K after taxes and tires.

bought my 2014EL (202b) for $34K w/34K miles in late 2015
figure its worth maybe $22K w/80K miles now (incl taxes i'd have to pay)

value drops about $4K/year , maybe $3K next year

had to get my dealer buddy to import it from Chicago, hard to find around here

Here's a Carfax, FWIW. Y'all can look it over and see if you see anything significant.

Still chewing on whether it's the right thing to do or not.
Would be nice to know what actual maintenance was done vs Carfax "Recommended maintenance performed". Plugs replaced at 100K? Does a LUBE place do plugs? I'd wonder what recommended maintenance was done or just buy the vehicle and do all those?

Gotta be there. Price seems high but if all the maintenance was done and it has brand spankin new tires and brakes and it looks cherry … could be worth it. Especially if it was the color and features you want. Extra points if NO BUBBLING PAINT.

Exactly the question I had.

Also looks like it came from an auction. Guess tho, probably 90% of used vehicles do. Anybody know of a way to see what it sold for at the auction?

If you have the vin, theirs an app that will get you that info. Theirs a post earlier last week that did just that. Found out a vehicle that was selling for $11,000, was bought at auction for $4,000. That's one hell of a Payday.

I just checked Menheim auctions and it wasn't sold there. Also Googled the VIN and didn't come up with anything. Sometimes the dealers even offer the car for less than they paid, then make their money on fees and back end financing charges. Some dealers around here shoot for $3500 in fees.

It was sold at Missouri auto auction.

Been looking today at what different Expeditions are listed at. Found a 13 on Craigslist for 1500 less, with fewer miles, but it's only an XLT. We'd be fine with that but we don't really like the two-tone paint scheme...

Not an app, just google the vin, some sites post auction results with actual vin numbers.... for reasons unknowable, that particular site was from TANZANIA (yes, africa), presumably for prospective importers... but there's many others, and lots of nations use english

Can you direct me to that post or app?

Thanks Adieu, didn't know it was that easy. Thought it was an app you download. Thanks for clearing that up for our members.

Based on that CarFax, I would run far, far away. For the first 18 months of its life it remained at the original dealer before being sold. Somehow during that time the windshield was damaged, which makes me wonder if that was in any way related to the fact that it was barely driven for those first 18 months. Maybe it's nothing, but the dealer I purchased my truck from had a disgruntled customer intentionally plow into 14 of their new vehicles. They fixed those vehicles in-house and sold them as new. :x Anyway, let's just say for the sake of argument the manager was just driving it around and there's nothing fishy there and move on.

Note the number of times the electrical was checked. That suggests some type of electrical issue that no one could track down. Then in 2018 the vehicle was sold by Eddy's Toyota and then ended up back at Eddy's Toyota a couple months later, who then auctioned it off. Now why would a dealer auction off a vehicle that they deemed worthy to sell only a couple months prior? It just seems like a lot of fast dumps of this vehicle in recent months.
