This is just more or less a rant but I would love to meet the f@#$%ng idiot who designed the plugs for the 3v 5.4. I would like to thank him for costing me $600 to change 8 plugs. I almost sh@t my pants when my mechanic told me how much. $200+ just for the plugs. Ok rants over.

WTF?! there is NO way it should cost you that much. all they do is use the tool and it takes just a few mins to take out the plugs. elvato! i know you have experience in this. dont you think its a little much?

Yeah, those 3V plugs are expensive and the job can be quite time consuming, depending upon how many plugs break, glad I have a 2v

i wouldl rather the plug blow out its alot easier to fix in my oponion, happened to my friends expy and we fixed it. hes not cery nice to his expedition either, he drove it THROUGH his garage about a year ago... the westin bumpergaurd held up nicely and saved alot of front end damage. that was to damn funny when I saw him pulling up with a chunk of drywall stck behind the gaurd.

from the research that i have done, if it has the original plugs, the longer you go, the more chance they have of breaking in the hole. the less miles, the better. i was screwed because mine allready had 116000 miles and i did not know about the plug problem.

don't wait. the longer you go, the worse it gets. my mechanic said they have heard of all 8 breaking. hopefully you guys wont have to pay out the arse like i had to. good luck.

Damn, that sucks. Wonder if he followed the TSB set out by Ford. It mentions how to remove them to minimize breakage, as well as where to put the anti-seize when putting them back in (it's not on the threads) to minimize future breakage.

I guess he must have dealt with this issue before if he had the tool to remove the broken plugs.

Either way, if you're going to pay someone to do it, it's best to "shop" around, as different places have different prices. Some places charge a set rate, while others charge a cheaper flat rate and charge for every broken plug. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to ask about their success rates.

It's also better to shop around for the plugs. I think they're around 9 bucks a plug on rockauto.com.

I posted the TSB in a thread by alakanexpy. I would do the when he does his Expy, just so he can have all the tools there. Since there's less chance of breakage, maybe even practice w/ the F150 before doing the Expy.
