I recently purchased a 2002 Exedition rwd 4.6 xlt. The brakes are a bit "Mushy". I was told by the person I bought it from that his mechanic said it was an ABS Control Unit and the part number is 2L1Z2C219BA.

Upon searching for this part, it appears that it is discontinued. Has anyone ran into an issue with this part? The local Ford dealer said there is really nothing they can do if the part is discontinued. The truck is driveable but the brakes need to be pumped before stopping. I have an appointment with the Ford dealership to run a diagnostic to be sure. Is there a good source to search for used or refurb parts like this that are no longer being made? I was unable to locate anything when I searched.

Thanks for any input.

I had that same problem when I got it from my father... it annoys me so much that I end up taking abs fuse out and it brakes great ever since.

If you haven't already, I would try bleeding the brakes before taking to the dealership. make sure you have plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir before and during the bleeding prosses. While you are there check for any leaks which you can see pretty easy it will look wet.

The abs unit leaking is a very common item that leaks on these vehicles. You can Google the companies that sell them. I believe this part should be available through the likes of Autozone, or O'Reillys. The other thing I've done with good success is get the factory part #, then go on eBay or equivalent, and I usually find the part.

Rock Auto lists a rebuilt unit.I would bleed brakes first. You may not like the price of the rebuilt unit !!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I really appreciate it! I wasn't able to locate the rebuit part on Rock Auto. I must be doing something wrong in searching. How expensive was it? Thanks.

I too looked at Rock Auto for you, but no luck on your year. They aren't cheap rebuilt, about $400.00 plus. I did see a few your year on eBay for under $100.00. problem with used though, is it will eventually leak. If you have the funds or don't mind the credit card, get a reman or new unit. Let us know if bleeding works, probably won't, but it's cheap enough to try. I wouldn't try bleeding at the abs pump for now though, just the 4 wheels. Sometimes when you mess with the pump bleeding, a dealer, or equipped shop has to finish the bleeding process.

Moose is absolutely correct once you break the seals on the fluid lines to the ABS control unit they will leak.
Did you try any of the suggestions? It will help if you post that and the results.
For instance if you pulled fuse #102 under the hood fuse panel (the fuse in back the corner) and the brakes are still mushy then it is probably not the ABS control unit. and if you bleed the brakes and have no leaks (you don't have to constantly put fluid in) and still mushy then you have bigger problems.

If it does stop when you pull the fuse, there are some online shops that they refurbish your unit that you send in for a reasonable price.

Mushy brakes, doesn't sound like ABS. You can pull ABS codes, with a scanner. My ABS had an open circuit code. It was the wire for the ABS motor. The leads were rotted and could not be soldered. I found a Ford E150 in the U-pull it yard. The ABS was the same. I just swapped the small electric motor. Check your flexible, rubber brake hoses, near the wheels. If they are swollen, they may causing your issue.
