I read through anything I could find on this site and everywhere else but im still having trouble. 2000 expedition will rarely shift into park and will not start in park, only neutral. First I tightened the 2 t30 screws under the dash, and of course the one screw bracket is broken from behind. Helped a little. I then adjusted the barrel thumb screw to center the indicator, no change. I then replaced neutral safety switch, I now have less sloppy shifting but still wont shift into park unless I push it up to park kinda hard and play around with it, still wont start in park.

Whats the next step here. I was going to order a new shift cable but I figured I would ask first. I would rather not piss away $55 for no reason. Im thinking maybe the cable is streached a little. It looks fairly new. I bought this truck a few months ago.

Once in park does it shift out of park fine? I know there is a solenoid that controls shift out of park only when the brake is depressed. Could it be out of adjustment? Just a guess.

Once I get it in park it come out just fine. I noticed under the truck that once I put it in park with the shifter(not completely in, I can go under and pull the lever on the tranny that the cable hooks to. I can move it back a little, I assume putting in park from under the truck. I'm going to pop the cable off and try to adjust the end of the cable with all of the teeth on it over the weekend. It looks like it adjustable.

Try locating the problem by removing the shift cable at the trans and move the trans through the different positions manually. If it doesn't bind the problem is in the cable/linkage assembly. If it does bind then the problem is internal to the trans.

Ok, yesterday I did run it through all the gears. Did it with the cable on first. I found that the cable wasn't pushing it all the way into park, so I popped the end off the tranny end and I adjusted the cable. It took a few minutes to figure out how to get it to move but the end has teeth on it and I was able to move that to adjust it. It now shifts into park and starts in park. It's still sloppy on the dash but it's good for now. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
