Sorry for reviving a nearly three year old thread, but this looks to be the big thread for catch cans on 3rd gens.

I installed a JLT can on my 15 limited back in October just prior to a trip from Tucson to Anaheim by way of San Diego. The day before I had also drilled a weep hole that bled about 3-5 tablespoons of oil out, but not sludgey.

Last week I was changing my oil (just hit 100k) and decided to empty the can. I was shocked that in about 6 weeks it was almost full. I measured ~70mL. Again what was collected looked like straight oil. Not sludgey at all.

Is that normal? Should I be checking it monthly?

I check it weekly in cold weather, your results are normal.

Did you take a picture of what you collected? How many miles? You gave us a time frame, but not a mileage.

No pic, but it looked like just used oil, no different than what you’d drain when changing it out. Mileage was ~99xxx prior to trip, when I checked the can I was just over 100k.

Edit: Total trip mileage was ~1000 miles.

3oz over 1000 miles, of actual oil should be something to be concerned about. That is a lot. In the winter with idling you will see more, but it will be milky because it will contain more condensation. Get a pic next time.

I’m probably going to grab my current mileage and then check back in a couple of weeks to see what accumulated in that time and check the mileage. We typically don’t do much mileage in our day to day lives, averaging around 12k/year with trips.

Sounds like a great plan.

Has anyone done this on an 07? Or just anyone with the 5.4, I need pics of setups if you have any.

Not needed unless your 5.4 V8 has been turbocharged and converted to direct injection (rather than port injection).

What about supercharged? I have one of those on the way.

Supercharger in an 5.4V8Expedition? Whatcha gonna to do with all that power?

Catch can always helps a little with forced induction due to crankcase pressurization but the need isn't as great with the 5.4V8 'cuz vs the EcoBoosts as the intake valves are constantly washed by the fuel due to port induction. If you're gonna drop those dollars into a supercharger the cost of a catch can will barely show up on the invoice.

Made a bet with a friend, said his tahoe could beat me in a race, and I'm not telling him I'm putting this on until race day. Also more power never hurt anything.

I don’t believe it is needed for the V8. I believe it is related to the turbo and ecoboost.

I have a stock 2007 XLT. Do you need pics of something? If so start a new thread. I’ll be happy to take pics if it helps.

If I don't need the catch can then I don't need pics but thank you

So just over 2 weeks since I posted, I decided to check today. Snapped a picture, it measured 44mL. Just looks and smells like used oil. Thin consistency.View attachment 75961
Can you pour it in a cup next time and let it sit, to see if it separates?

So you collected 44ML in 2 weeks? How many miles? Type of driving? Temp?

That seems like more than you should of pure oil.

Mileage was somewhere between 500-750 miles, driving is primarily short trips (less than 5 miles) in town. Little to no freeway. Temps have been from the low 70s down to the low 40s. Vehicle performance/gas mileage has not been effected. We do tend to idle a lot. Between remote start and waiting in long pickup lines for the kids.

Since I just emptied it yesterday, I’ll just look keep a more detailed log over the next week and follow up.

Got mine (finally) installed the other day on our 2016 Exped. They had them on sale (10%) around Black Friday and I just now got around to putting it on. Ridiculously easy.
