121k miles, no warranty, quoted 10k for new transmission, independent shop advice, sell it and be done. Dealer near me has 5 month wait for heavy department. If sell, I’m downsizing for our two new teenage drivers.

Sell or keep?

2018 explorer Platinum. Mine has 90,000 miles and is just getting broken in. Changing oil @5000 miles as well as all of the fluids at 50,000 miles. Just be able to verify service records

If paid off, keep it, put some money into the trans and have it rebuilt. Find a ford performance shop that specializes in the 10R80 ( they are out there) and have it rebult with better than factory parts. I'm having mine rebult in a couple weeks, It will be under 7K for a better built unit from the shop than the dealer would do with the standard facory parts. New vehicle prices are insane and interest rates will likely be more than what you had when you bought the current expedition...

I think I'd agree with @apex96 in having it rebuilt with a shop specializing in that transmission.

When it works, it works great. If I was going to replace the expedition, I'd replace it with....an Expedition (or Lincoln Navigator). Most of the issues with this vehicle can be 'fixed out' of it.

If the truck is paid for, in good condition and nothing else is wrong, keep the truck and rebuild the trans by a performance shop.

I had a 2018 F150 Powerstroke with a 10R80 and besides the annoying 1-3 and specifically the 3-5 shift, the tranny never had any problems. Now I got the 2024 Expedition SPP and it still has the 1-3 shift once in a while, but the 3-5 shift is gone. I also notice now faster shifts and this is how I like it. To me the 24 transmission is better than the one in the 18 was, but keep in mind the SPP package in the new one. I am sure Ford didn’t do only something internal, but also with the programming.

All of todays vehicles are garbage, don't expect a newer one of any brand to be really reliable. Just fix it!

Pretty sad state of affairs, when the best option for a new big SUV is buy an 85,000 unit and fix the factory flaws.

Sell it and be done. I went thru it with my '14 Acura MDX. Six months and $7,000 later I ended up selling it anyways. Didn't trust the rebuild, too many issues with that shop. Wouldn't go through that again. Besides, what are you going to do for transportation for the ~6 months it might take an independent shop to rebuild it? I doubt you'll want to rent a car for that long. Cut your losses and sell it now.

This^ Sadly, this is what holds me back from doing anything. I will say, I'm waiting to see the February incentives. If they're good, maybe I'll look again. My other option might be to go with a NEW 2023 Navi. Yes, 2023. There are some dealers who are very heavily discounting them.

A good independent shop takes 2 days to do a rebuild...

A trans is like $5-10K. A new vehicle is gonna cost you 10X that and still not be bulletproof. Its hard for me to justify any of these new vehicles today.

My 2019 tranny is doing fine so far at 82,000 miles. My driver door handle broke, not covered by extended or powertrain warranty. $1200.00 highway robbery. So, I just leased my first vehicle. No more worries for 3 years about driving a computer that can break down. All new vehicles are so expensive, but leasing you pay for what you use. This is my first so I'll see if I like it or not. And at the end they don't want them back, so you can get a great deal buying it used. And you know the entire history.

Good afternoon all, administrators please relocate this post if this is not the proper location it should be in.

My name is Jesse Jones, I work at one of the largest Ford dealerships in Northern Virginia in the service center. I would like to reach out and offer a possible life-line to anybody experiencing issues and or catastrophic transmission failure including but not limited to the 10 speed 10R80 transmission. As I recently transferred from another Ford dealer I am well aware that one of the biggest complaints from owners is the extensive wait list involving most dealers transmission shops. In many cases including the dealership I previously worked at, we were booking out months in advance for a simple diagnosis not including repair. I am sure some of you have experienced this and I am well aware that it has or will leave sour taste in your mouth as a consumer. I am excited to announce that is not the case in this service center. Typical turn around time is 1-2 weeks, in some cases depending on shop-load of course we have been able to diagnose, rebuild, and or remove and replace the units in 3-4 business days. I would be happy to answer any questions regarding what Ford has done so far to rectify these issues, including the updated parts designs. I have a fully staffed transmission shop full of experienced technicians eager to get these vehicles repaired in a timely fashion. Another concern a lot of people have had is what can be done if the vehicle is outside of the factory 5 year 60K warranty, I would be happy to talk about proceedings under that scenario as well. You can reach our main line at 571-506-0888 or myself directly at [email protected]
Give this guy a call! He can help you decide and maybe steer you to someone that can reliably do the tranny for less.

2019 Ford Expedition 101500K miles. CDF drum has failed. Kicks hard into 2nd and 3rd. Also gets stuck in 7th gear when coming to a complete stop. Have 3 quotes from transmission shops. $8700 to $9800. All want to replace with a remanufactured Jasper transmission including a 3year warranty. Would anyone consider this instead of rebuilding?

Well we let it go. Smart decision for our family right now…Downsized since we just added two teenage drivers to our policy, came out cheaper on insurance and cut down on gas costs at 36mpg. New to us seats 7. We saved all the way around. Had 33k miles and is still under factory engine/powertrain warranty, and bought extended warranty. When we need extra cargo space for road trips we’ll rent an Expy or equivalent.

I did the same thing and dumped mine, but i did it before the trans took a complete dump. I had about 76k on mine (or around there). I Have to say i was NOT impressed with the amount of issues i ran into up to 76k. I figured past 100k id see trans problems, coolant leaks. That makes complete sense at that point. Downsized to a VW Atlas which fits the family and while its not near as much cargo space, it still works out just fine for now. Car-top carrier and hitch adapter can make things work if i really need more space.
