For most folks you never want to use 4H or 4L. Icy roads and loose gravel roads where 2H or 4A doesn't work will be the exceptions and then you may need to deactivate traction control so all 4 wheels spin.
Running an Expedition on an"ORV" trail seems a recipe for disaster since these are not real off road vehicles. Not sure the real Bronco is either (the Bronco Sport ain't). Regular tires are poor "off road." You may want something similar to a RZR.
