I did the same thing with my 2000 Explorer. Installed a salvage cooler out of a late model F-350 V10. Works great and allows me to bypass the radiator cooler. I'm wondering if there is a cooler that is the same width as the OEM, only taller. One that will fit in the factory location and mount.On my 2000, I swapped in the trans cooler from the 6.0L diesel. It was a monster. Probably going to swap another one into my 2014.
I have an UltraGauge monitoring trans temp. It’s getting the temp from the OBDII port and I believe the sensor is in the valve body. The other day, it was a pretty warm day (for February). It was about 55 degrees. Doing some normal suburban driving (some stop’n’go but 45-55 mph driving between lights) and wasn’t towing. I saw temps of 205 degrees. My 2000 also ran warm. After I put in the 6.0L cooler in, it rarely got over 175. Mostly stayed around 150 degrees.
The 6R75/80 won’t run that cool like an older 4 speed unit since its thermostatically controlled, one could put in a transmission cooler the size of the radiator and it still won’t run that cool lol. The thermostatic valve to the cooler doesn’t open until it hits roughly 190-200 Fahrenheit. After it’s up to operating temperature the lowest you will see is about 190, if it dips below that it stops flow until it gets above set point again. There must be a reason they want the heat to be in that range and I guess the heavy duty tow package with the trans oil cooler helps keep it there. Also. I assume there is no plug in the converter. My excursion had a plug in the converter and one in the pan. but 205 on a cool day without any load? Sounds excessive. Hate to see what it runs when it’s 90 degrees out.
Took some measurements, and did some research. Seems that all Expeditions (correct me if I'm wrong) got auxillary coolers. The tow package vehicles got bigger coolers. Mine does have the tow package as evidenced by other features. At some point in its history my vehicle was involved in a front end accident. It was repaired some time ago, and reported to me when I purchased it. It looks good, and drives great so i figured it was repaired correctly. However they cheaped out and replaced the cooler with the smaller, standard cooler not the OEM tow package cooler. Also didn't replace the plastic lower guard/air deflector but that's not important to me now. So I'll have to buy and replace the cooler with the larger one.

New to me but I don't think it goes through the radiator.Quick question... Does the fluid go through the radiator to the cooler then back to the trqnsmission, or through the cooler then the radiator then the transmission?
