First time I saw this thread was today, just added my vehicle and hope others do as well. Seems very interesting, good luck.

A few Expedition owners have asked me recently how soon I'll have results for the model. Unfortunately, this is the key aspect of the research that's beyond my control. All depends on how quickly enough people sign up and partisicipate.

223 owners now signed up. Three model years are in the survey, and two more are close.

Help get your year included!

We'll have a partial result for the 2003 next month. Thanks, guys. With more participants, though, we could provide full results for all years. We'll get there, just a matter of how soon.

Help make it sooner rather than later:

That result will be posted to the site tomorrow. 239 Expedition owners now signed up. A good start, but more are needed to provide precise results for all model years.

We've posted a result for one model year of the Expedition, the 2003. With a repair frequency of 83 successful repair trips per year per 100 vehicles, it's about average.

This is based on a very small sample size. With more participants we could provide precise results and cover all model years.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February, hopefully with additional model years.

These results aren't really accurate because they don't account for people that don't perform scheduled maintenance. When people don't perform scheduled maintence, things break down more and it makes the truck look less reliable then it really is. I have performed all the schedule maintenance on my 03 expedition and after 120,000 miles I haven't had a single mechanical thing go wrong. I say mechanical because I've had things like window switches stop working, but nothing that keeps the truck from getting me from point a to point b.

Few cars break down in the way you describe before 100,000 miles these days. Most repairs are non-mechanical. On the site we post the description of every reported repair, so people can see what's behind the numbers.

I don't agree with that because most people don't bother fixing non-mechanical problems since they are usually expensive and not necessary to operate the vehicle. Also, there are many cars with engine/transmision problems before 100,000 miles (I could give examples, but the proof is on your own website). If you want to make the website more accurate, group the repairs in groups like engine, transmission, engine electrical, interior electrical, ect.

Also, what does " 83 successful repair trips per year per 100 vehicles" mean? The way I read it, it means 83% of vehicles were needing repairs.

In saying "not mechanical," I probably spoke a bit too broadly. I meant that repairs that disable the vehicle are rare. We have two questions on the survey that get at this. One asks if the car had to be towed, another asks if the car could have been driven for another week without fixing the problem. Roughly one in 50 reported repairs requires a tow, and roughly one in ten had to be repaired right away.

I'd like to have a separate stat for the latter. But the more rare something is, the larger the required sample size. So this will have to wait until more people are involved.

Once we have plenty of people involved, I'll be more than happy to cut the data every which way.
