so i guess im not going to buy that cheap o winch. ill just wait till i get me a 12 ton one.

a 12 ton winch would rip out cars in half... a good 8000 lb winch would be great and get a snatch block for when you really get stuck

+1 for a good snatch block. I have pulled out a 20 ton MRAP from a culvert using a snatch block and a big palm tree. It was much better than waiting a couple hours for a HEMMET or the big boy M88.

And 4.6 or 5.4:)

I have not been able to find 1 source that list all the different years. I have found many different sources but they all seemed to be different figures.

The engines weigh about the same. If you put them both next to each other you won't be able to tell the difference.

But what about a 20 ton winch and a snatch block? I saw one somewhere. It's in an off road magazine project. Living on 47s is the project truck. An old cherrokee. So maybe I should get that. Haha

I would agree. Can't be much of a weight difference... maybe 10-15 lbs ?? But with the 1" taller deck height and wider intake I bet I could identify which is which if you put them next to each other. :)

The real challenge would be identifying if its a 5.4 vs 4.6 looking at just one.:hmm: Have not worked on them enough. Now put a 351 vs a 302 and I could tell you right away.

What about the trannys??

got that off wiki. dont know what the difference is. maybe the engine. but the 351 and 302 are way different. or at least i can tell. haha but also with the 4.6 and 5.4 the 5.4 is pretty much just a bored out 4.6. i think i remember reading something that someone bored out his 4.6 to a little over the 5.4. not sure if thats true or if im talking out my ass. but that would be kind of point less. might as well buy a 5.4 and bore that out. haha

I don't think you can bore a 4.6 out to a 5.4, the 4.6 stroker kits only make it a 5.0. My truck has the 4R70W, I wish I had the 4R100 though.

4.6 vs 5.4 is the same as 302 vs 351......taller deck ( longer stroke cranks ) 4.6 and 5.4 both have same bore stock, 5.4 just has taller deck which of course needs a wider intake.

5.4's came with the beefier tranny 4R100, 4.6 came with 4R70W

Check 4.6 specs and 5.4 specs.
Wikipedia seems to have info on everything :)

I wish the expeditions never came with the 4.6 all the options are smaller than those on the 5.4, and I don't see who wants the smaller parts and less power when it comes to a 4x4 vehicle. And if my tranny ever goes, and I have money, I would like to add a 6 speed out of the Super Duties to the list of trannies :D

The new turbo diesel superduty puts out 800 ft lbs of torque. That tranny should hold up very well in the expy. Makes the 5.4 torque seem pretty wimpy.:hmm:

I wish I had the new diesel. . . My grandpa is looking at one next year when he is retired. The 6 speed I'm looking at is from the 5.4. I'm not sure how the gearing and stuff is from the diesel tranny other than the bellhousing. I've looked a little on it and don't remember seeing anyone doing the swap other than that you would need a body lift due to its height, but it would be sweet!

You would also need some kinda computer to controll it. Your factory Expy computer would freak out!

I don't belive they have any stand alone computers for that tranny yet being that it is so new, but give it a year or two and I am sure there will be one.

I used to be a manual guy but traffic here general sucks. Makes living with a manual difficult. That and I am getting old so now I prefer automatics. I do have to shift my stang...but it is an automatic (reverse manual valve body). It would still have the t5 if it was not for the glass 3rd gear. Gave up after it broke the 2nd time.
