Stumbled upon this while looking for info about adding auto headlights. I'm sure some of you may want it disabled. I didn't know it was an option and enabled mine with it.

Start in the truck with all doors closed and the key turned off.
Put the switch in the on position and press the door unlock button 3 times.
Put the switch in the off position and press the door unlock button 3 times.
Put the switch in the on position, you should hear a quick note from your horn.
Press the door unlock button 1 time then press the door lock button 1 time.
You should hear a short note from your horn indicating that the auto-lock system is disabled. If you hear a short note then a longer note from the horn then the auto-lock system has just been enabled.
Turn the switch to the off position. You will hear a short note from the horn to let you know that the system has been changed.

These steps should be done within 30 seconds in order to properly activate or deactivate the feature.

The system will in most cases revert back to the original setting anytime you disconnect the battery. I understand that these directions will work on any late model Ford vehicle but I have only performed it on the Ford trucks.

Thanks for the tip. My remote start went on the fritz, so starting it manually to warm up it always locks the doors once I start it = getting locked out (good thing for spare keys).

Maybe this could be a good sticky thread, Are there any other options that are enabled/disabled through a method like this?

Not sure what it 'sticky' worthy around here....There is another thread out there that should be sticky too, it's about how to disable the 'air suspension light' on the dash.

Maybe a moderator could chime in on what it would take to get something sticky.....

I can't stand the automatic locks....I keep a spare key not only at home but at work. Anytime I start the truck to run without being in it...I make sure to roll down the window...even if it's really hot or cold out. I'm going to give this a shot. It's a little disappointing that I will reset when the battery is disconnected.

as far as the 97 you are correct I was under the impression the being your profile says you have a 98 and that you read the 98 manual that you didn't find it But I can't say for certain if it works or doesn't work on the 97 models

I know Ford sometimes does things different from one model year to another So I take it the procedure does work on the 97's just that it isn't mentioned in the owners manual

Yeah , it works. I disabled mine again... It seems to lock whenever it's ready. sometimes when I do from R to D, sometimes when I go from P to R. sometimes when I turn the headlights on before leaving...I don't carry a spare yet because I haven't looked for one w/o the plastic housing or transponder yet.

procedure works like a charm, and yes, bedrck46 is correct, it is in the manual (2000 owners should look on page 88). I must have been so excited about finding the key fob programming on page 87 I missed the auto lock chapter.

Happy Days

heh, that was literally the second thing I did to my truck (the first thing I did ws stop at the parts store on the way home and buy 2 tail light bulbs, 3 signal bulds, and a headlight bulb to replace the burnt out ones) when I bought it last year.

I do not remember the exact procedure I used for my 97, but the above one sounds about right. And I have never had it reset after disconnecting the battery, it has always remembered the correct setting: stupid autolock OFF

it would be nice if it locked when it were supposed to. mine seemed to lock whenever. In P it would randomly lock after I closed the door. Or when I turned the headlights on. In R it wouldn't lock and it would eventually lock in D.

I quickly turned mine back off.
