laminated glass stopped a break in...

Learned that the Expedition side windows are laminated multi layer glass.

Left a concert in the St Louis area to a parking lot of about 40 cars with broken windows, smash & grab. We were one of the lucky few that they couldnt get into. They tried a few swings to get the glass to shatter, but only the outside layer cracked. the inside layer is unbroken. thought it was interesting!

Front windows are double laminated, rear on Nav are also.
Great for this kind of situation but you also cannot use one of those window breakers to get out either.

When did this start and is it specific to certain trims?

I know our 2019 XLT didn't have laminated glass on any side windows.

Sorry for your damage. Are the windows on the rear doors laminated as well? Thought I had read someplace that it's only the front door glass that's laminated.

I bet it's just the front side windows that are laminated... the replacement glass is ordered, the regular tempered was ~$150, laminated was ~$200, went with the laminated replacement for sure!

I'll also be throwing on some 35% tint to the glass before i swap in the replacement pane.

That is good to know especially in Florida with the many water incursions reported each year. I keep one of those window break out tools in all of our families vehicles.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I found a PDF from AAA listing many different models of vehicles and where laminated glasses is used. It seems to only go up to 2019 though, but looking at the pattern, it would seem the Ford Expeditions has laminated glass on all 4 doors (from 2018-2019, before that it was just the first row). Not sure about the cargo area though. Can anyone check? Our family is looking to get an Expedition. If the windows are indeed shatter resistant, it would be a plus because smash and grabbers are never punished here in the area where I live...

My 2003 Lincoln Aviator had the same crack on a side window. The outside layer was cracked but not the inner layer.

That list is from 2019 hence why the year range stops at 2019. I'd hazard to guess that the current gen Expedition, 2018+, has laminated glass on all four door windows up to current model year.
And sorry about where you live... SF used to be a nice city. I've been there a few times but that was over a decade ago.

Our family's been here a tiny bit over 2 decades since we immigrated from China. Yeah, it used to be better. Now I don't even dare head into SF unless absolutely necessary. It's not even that safe on the edge of the bay area now where I live. If it wasn't for work we would have moved away long time ago, but high tech jobs pay so much.

This is kind of why I want to see if the windows are all laminated. I guess you can stick some tints on the non-laminated ones to shatterproof them.

Windshield, driver and Passenger are double laminated.
On expedition the rear windows all the way back are tempered glass.
On Nav the rear two door windows are double laminated.
The double laminate is for exterior sound reduction.

Open the window, look at the top edge, if you see two pieces of glass together it’s laminated, if it’s one piece it’s single tempered (technically both types are tempered)

Trim / models with laminated door glass were upper trims only. I know my platinum listed it in the equipment list. I recall the lower trims did not.

Many makers did that to differentiate the trims and pricing. Even Subaru has done that with higher trim packages.

Nope, bought it brand new, so the 2019 XLT def did NOT have laminated glass. No notes on the window sticker stating it as laminated either and when it was rolled it was def NOT laminated

I will have to do a closer inspection of our 2020 platinum and see what the window sticker says.
