I've gone through this with my Lexus and have to agree to Gixer. The trouble is that your standard halogen bulb is omnidirectional in its light output. The housing is designed with this in mind and gathers the light all around the bulb to throw it out. LEDS are different. Look at Jeff's picture. Light only comes out those yellow patches. The headlight might appear brighter but it doesn't mean it's throwing light further.
Even retro fit HID bulbs can be problematic if the bulb sits further in or out of the housing compared to the halogen bulb.
