My friend you are right however i have been feeling it less rough in the front. It is difficult to describe. Feeling it in the front without the front drive line should exclude the transmission. I have been working through misfires so i am familiar with the engine timing and it seems to be off a little occasionally. Same problem with misfires is where its from. I have been thinking about getting a better program that can graph my engine and i can analyze any fluctuations.

I know it is shifting into fifth gear of top gear. And holds up to 70 at a steady vibration but it is there and in the front.

I have an appointment at the specialist shop next week to look at front suspension n stuff. I will let you know.

Well now you didn't mention misfires, or bad state of tune! You gotta get a handle on your engine firing right, and smooth first! Otherwise your going to be chasing your tail until next Christmas!

When I got a coil wet and shorted it a lot of symptoms looked like tranny troubles! My truck was vibrating in overdrive and behaving oddly. When I turned overdrive off it didn't vibrate, Sounds like a tranny issue right? The misfire caused all my issues. StudaBaker if you have a misfire that will make everything act up and your trans will act up as well since its not receiving adequate power. Once my coil and plug were replaced and the misfire was rectified it was smooth as silk.

I thought all issues with misfires were resolved. I just replaced a pigtail connector to coil pack. I probably still have both to fix. Tune and front diff.

something interesting i have learned is that in 2wd models the selection controls the front differential somehow. I assumed the selection occurred in the transfer case. This is relevant to me because it makes both my differential and transfer case simpler. There is a kind of electronic-locker in the front of 2wd models. I have had my expedition in the shop this entire time and they have tightened up my suspension very well but I still feel it and i had one mechanic pry the drivers side of the diff axle out what appeared to be too much. there was a kind of retaining clip in there retaining the axle and it appears to have vibrated off the axle. this makes sense to me from what i feel. turning more to the right i feel it. and it the kind of vibration that would be caused by this type of thing. it feels kind of like a cv axle intermittent. no big deal until I go far on the freeway which i want to be able to do. a day far or something. I may have to do this my self as mechanics do not find anything broken to fix.

Hey Studabaker, thought we lost you! Your comment on 2 wheel drive models the selection controls the front differential somehow. That doesn't make sense, because 2 wheel drives don't have but a rear differential! I think you meant the setting of the switch makes a difference. Your Suv should never be in 4 wheel high or low, unless off road, or plowing through snow. Doing so will burn up your differential quicker than you can imagine. Your closer to Lake Tahoe than I am, maybe try it out in the snow. That axle clip makes sense, replace at once if you haven't yet. Ever seen a car at the drag strip that used a conventional axle without the clip to hold axle. I saw one guy that his axle and wheel came out 2 feet from the wheel well. Scary. Sounds like your getting closer to a drivable, quiet vehicle. Your Suv is one year newer than mine, so like mine it has awd. Change that clip, let us know how it turns out.

Some expeditions have a 2wd option in addition to 4 hi 4 low and awd which is automatic 4wd. There is a sensor detecting rear wheel slipage which engages 4wd in awd selection. In 2wd selection those models have a set up similar to an elocker but its just an e-auto 4wd. If that is clear. The actual change is in the front differential. In a wws vehicle your right fronts just have a knuckle with no hole for drive axle like a cv axle in the fronts. To the best of my knowledge all expeditions have a front diff of some type. I think that race car had an open differential in the rear and that axle came out but it was not the primary side so it kept going. In an open diff there is one side that will always engage. The other side will spin freely if it looses traction. I am outside working on it today. What a nice day.

I plan on testing by unbolting my drivers side cv axle and if the flange comes more than an inch out or so thats not good.

One hint i have found on the front diif cover is that it has a mounting bolt and i have neay removed the entire diff to remove the cover to inspect it.....

If i put a jack under the diff and lift a bit then i can rotate the cover up and off without taking off anything else.

Thank you for your reply.

Mine doesn't have two wheel option, just awd, 4lo, 4hi. Sounds like you got one hell of an education On transfer cases, and differentials. I think your right there on finishing your noise issue. Then you'll have time to work on the commander/president Stude!

I guess some expys are 2wd. I forgot. I meant to refer to 4wd with a 2wd selection.
