so im a long time lurker and just recently became a member. i brought home my first expedition today and it has a major running issue. it wont idle after tryin a couple time it fires up and idles up way high but comes right down to stall unless u feather the gas constantly to keep it at or above 1k. it has 3 codes p1401, p0171, and a p0174. i got it froma buddy who said it just recently started and got pretty bad in a few days so he parked it. it sat for only a couple days. another buddy of mine said his 4.6 stang did the same thing wen the timing chain tensioner went bad. im new to fords so this 5.4 is stmping me would really like to get it running right tho. thanks again for all the help in advance

I would start by at least replacing the plugs and if needed the COP's (coils) if you don't put new coils on at least put new boots on with new plugs.

p0171 and p0174 is more likely due to a vacuum leak or egr system related, check the DPFE sensor and the two rubber hoses that connect to the exhaust tube they tend to dry out over time and miles

if you do your own work I would suggest

Ford workshop manual on DVD. Can be obtained from seller "morpheousking" on e-bay. Cost about $20.00 Much better than Clymer, Haynes or Chilton and also includes wiring diagrams

Don't waste your money on a Clymer, Haynes or Chilton Manual.
It is well worth the $20.00 just make sure you get the DVD for your year as the seller has different DVD's for different years

If you look at the drivers side exhaust manifold you will see a riser tube that connects to the EGR Valve you will also see two rubber hoses connected to the riser the other ends of those hoses goes to the DPFE sensor.

Sorry? Any who I started digging in to her today taking the plugs out which look totally hit gap is way of and they are Bosch platinums and I think the platinum is gone and the not porcelin side is all deformed so new plugs and coils coming but also found a mass vacuum leak. Looks like a big hose straight into the back of the intake that my hands can't reach so after I get that fixed I'll have an update but hopefully it all works out
