I’m looking at a 2019 Expy Max, but it has only the iV rated tow package (6000) not the max tow (9200). What can make this hi horse power and hi torque motor limited to 6000# of towing. OK smaller rear end gear, but with the 10 speed this dear has less problem towing and creations torque? I will be towing a 24 ft salt water flats boat, 5000# will I have any issues with this 6000# towing Expy? Thanks

Ect13, you are long winded!
Any thought on making a no max tow into a max tow? By adding the essentials of the Max tow? Trans cooler radiator cooler electric brake controller?

You can add the trailer brake controller it is simple plug n play with a Forscan mod to activate it. However, like @Deadman said, good luck with adding the HD radiator & 3.73 rear gears.

Yeah the 3.73 gears make it a no go for convert as too much involved.

You are under the tow rating for the non-hd tow package. If you are under the payload capacity too, what is the worry? Back up truck and connect trailer, check lights, etc...and go.

You are pretty much the same weight as the travel trailer I pull with my non-hd and I have zero issues with the truck easily doing so. You would be pulling a boat so way less drag.

That will tow fine, but if you are in the market and plan to maybe tow MORE, then just find a tow package. They're not that hard to find.

Keep looking; feel like I dodged a bullet by passing on a non-HD tow for one that did. We tow 75% of the time with a 4300 lb. TT. Would be a dog without IMO.

The non-hd tows that weight no problem. Now if you are saying that 75% of the time you drive the truck you tow a trailer, yeah the 3.73 gears make sense. For someone that is going tow a boat a few weekends out of the year in no way is the non-hd going to be a dog. Also, IMO when you get over the 6k mark in weight of a trailer this is not the truck you should be towing anything with on a regular basis regardless if hd vs non-hd and should be using something like the F-250, etc...

The bump in actual payload capacity between the hd and non-hd isn't that great overall and this is only a half-ton truck when it comes down to it and with it's rear suspension just doesn't tow really heavy weight comfortably. Again IMO.

Great replies thanks. Budget is a factor. Plus, I have not seen any HD tows while online search? I do have a TT which weighs 5500, which I would like to tow with Expy, but enjoy towing with wife’s loaded Ram 1500. The Expy Max I’m looking at 2019 XLT 46k miles, 200a, very basic, 1770 payload, rental/lease with Ford 12month 12,000 mile warranty 100k trans. asking
$33800. Any thoughts on this buy? Thanks for your great reply’s

All Expeditions get the same transmission cooler, which is integrated with the radiator. The HD tow package gets you an upgraded radiator. But that’s not a cost effective mod. So the only part you can easily add is the EBC. Now, all that said, you’ll be fine towing that boat with the standard towing package.

I’ll chime in too. You’ll be absolutely fine. Add a FORD brake controller and forscan upgrade $250 total and your set. If buying from the dealer work that into the sale.

I tow my TT 5700# no issues at at, trans temp, power, etc. tossed on on sumo springs and it’s perfect.

To understand you? What gear does your Expedition have? Thanks

OP most likely doesn’t need to worry about a brake controller. He is towing a boat. All boat trailers that I have seen use surge brakes instead of electric brakes.

Agree no brakes for towing boat. But, I did talk about towing my TT, too?

My $.02 (I rounded up haha)... A few things to consider... You didn't mention where you live so I'm going to assume sea level and without mountains (I ask this because of rear end gearing... 3.31 wouldn't do near as well in the mountains). Also you didn't mention if your 5000# boat and 5500# travel trailer were dry weights or loaded up. I've towed boats, trailers, campers, double trailers for decades and have towed with all kinds of vehicles. The difference between the two trailers you mention is 500#'s. If those are wet/loaded weights, that's no difference, you'll be fine towing either. Just get you a brake controller for the TT. The last bit of knowledge nugget I'll leave you with is this... we live in a litigious environment. The BIGGEST reason I would not tow one of those trailers with your Expedition is if I knew I was over the 6000lb tow limit. You get in one accident and I promise all hell can break loose with gross negligence and so forth. It's a nasty road to go down (pun intended). The likelihood is really low, but that is a consideration you should also think about. The good news is, you have the RAM to tow with too.

Good luck with your search and purchase!

I bought my wife a 2020 Expy Max LTD stealth with the tow package.
We towed my roughly 2000# RZR 4 Seater on a 2700# 22' trailer to South Carolina from PA for Thanksgiving. So just over half of it's towing capacity.
I will say the Expy HAS power, but that was about it for the positive towing experience.
The thing got about 7-8 mpg.
The rear of the Expy squatted like a sorority girl in the woods with a bladder full of beer.
The brake controller is time-delayed so it flat spotted one of my trailer tires so it shimmied for 500 miles.
And the mirrors are too small for towing.

Now I may new a little jaded because I traded a 17 F 350 platinum long bed, diesel for this Expy. And that thing could tow Montana if it had a hitch.yes, the entire state.

Otherwise I love the Expy, but it's not a towing machine I'm my book.
