Transmission or transfer case??

No movement when in drive or reverse. When tried to put in park it makes grinding noise. It was driving fine until I got off the highway. Stop at light on exit ramp and it wouldn't move when I tried to accelerate. I have a 97 expedition xlt 5.4 triton 4x4

Can you identify where the griding noise is coming from? ATF look or smell burnt?

No it doesn't smell burnt.. it sounds like it's coming from the tranny. But it's only when I try to put it in park... almost like the tranny is in gear but the T/C is in N or vice versa. Idk I'm not a mechanic but I've got a pretty good understanding of general mechanics. If that makes since... pretty much I can do most things. I just have not had any experience with this kind of problem before. So I need help with possible diagnosis and a Lil help on how to fix it
