Tune-Up Specifics?

1998 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6 L SOHC

I was looking have someone perform a full tune up on my vehicle and thought some of you could clarify some information for me.

I've heard mixed information about the parts I will need. I also heard that only a specialist should perform a full tune up due to a specific procedure?

Will any compatible part fit? I think I've read somewhere on the forum that only motocraft parts should be used, however I have a mechanic friend who says the cheaper parts would be fine.

I am inclined to just use the motocraft spark plugs and the non-ford specific versions of the other parts, but want to be sure.

For a full tune-up should I only be buying the motocraft parts? Any advice will help. Also, does anyone have the procedure?

you can grab the motorcraft plugs and wires from rock auto for about the price autolite would cost from the brick stores, due to my recent experience, I would stay away from anything not motorcraft when it comes to the ignition side of this motor.

the "procedure" you speak of is the torque of the spark plugs to to the low count of threads on the plugs/heads. too much, one can blow out, too little and it can work loose and ruin the threads and blow out. I did it myself twice so far with no problems but that doesn't mean it can't still go wrong.

So, use motorcraft and use a trusted mechanic if you aren't a DIY, if you do do it, use a torque wrench to proper spec and be caereful.

also, if you DIY, you will need the tool to remove the quick connects on the heater hoses so you can access the number four plug. do it first and the rest is easy enough.
