We recently got a 2000, 5.4 2wd with the axle code 17, and based on what I researched this is the 3.31 axle ratio.
We are looking to buy a used travel trailer but the GVWR is 7500 lbs which makes me think I need more towing capacity? we would be parking it in our driveway which is on a hill.
I want to level up the towing to the 3.73 to max out the towing capability while keeping it safe. It has the S930P (9.75", 3.31 with 14 mm lugs) and looks like the S935P (9.75", 3.72. 14 mm lugs) would be the exact swap.
Things I have done:
- installed a class III hitch reciever (https://www.curtmfg.com/part/13049)
(good to 6k and 10k with weight distribution hitch)
Things I am planning to do:
- new rear coil springs with 1 inch spacers
- air bags
Questions:
- Should I replace the rear coil springs ( they are sagging a bit) or just add the spacer?
estimate is $500 for shop to do coils, but could probably do myself? (Haynes manual says I need to disconnect the drive shaft?)
- Do I need to replace the rear end with the better gear ratio to get get better tow capacity?
- Is it a direct swap from the S930P to the S935P? or is there something else I need to know (e.g. drive shaft length)?
