VIN decoding & options/packages

Using a VIN, how can I tell if there was a tow package originally installed? I have the VIN, 1FMFU20586LA50282, but don't know where to pull specific build data for it. I know the VIN will tell me me basics like model, where it was built, engine, etc., but that's about it. I also tried calling the two local Ford dealerships, and they were useless... Thanks.

EDIT: Figured I would try it out with yours haha. You have an 06 Limited Expedition, but unfortunately it looks as though you can't tell the HD tow pkg from the VIN. Bummer because I always thought you could. On the old trucks (1st gens) if you had the transmission cooler behind the front bumper and a 3.73 rear axle, you had the HD towing pkg. No idea if that holds true with the newer models though.

It seems this isn't required, however.

The HD tow pkg usually comes with the special trans cooler, HD radiator, Class IV hitch with 4 and 7 pin connectors, and wiring harness for brake controller, so if you have the package you have these items.

If yours has a trailer brake unit installed ( usually mounted to the knee bolster) its aftermarket as Ford never made a factory installed one for the Expeditions until 2012.

Also, 3:73's were not part of the HD tow package.

Trying to find out Standard vs Premium Towing Package

Hi Matt,

First I would like to say Thank You. I think it's awesome that you take the time to do this for people. We are looking at Expeditions to purchase. IT is critical that it has the Premium (HD) Towing package. We are looking at one that we like, and the sales person said it was standard. I'm confused, as it has the 5-V (Class 4 hitch), but the 4 prong plug. Could you possibly run this VIN, please ? Also, can you provide where you are getting this info, just in case this only has standard package, the search will continue. We need to be able to tow 7700 lbs and hopefully just install the Electic Trailer brakes, by mounting and buying the plug in jumper.
