I've been using an old Curt from my other SUV with a standard drop, need a new one. I usually just tow a small 5x8 trailer for moving stuff

Thanks

Interested too.

How much drop/rise are people finding they need?

The receiver seems lower on our new 4th Gen vs the 17 3rd Gen.

Just curious what people are finding.

I have a Weigh Safe 2-Ball Mount w/ Built-In Scale - 2-1/2" Hitch - 4" Drop, 5" Rise - 14.5K

I dropped it a couple inches and never needed the lowest setting. A pic is attached with my 18' Featherlite. I had to slightly change the weight distribution by moving the car slightly forward and dropped the height a tad more after the pic but this should give you an idea. It's not even close to the lowest setting.

With stock suspension I use a traditional Curt hitch with a 4" drop. Keeps my camper at a level 18" front to back. My tongue weight is probably 450-500 max so no need for weight distribution. I forgot to measure sag, but it seemed to be minimal.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has prohibited me from actually towing this year, but I did the initial setup back in January before we had a stay-at-home order. I do have sway control. That plate is not shown, but it basically is a second smaller ball to the right when facing the rear of the vehicle.

Drop will be dependent on the trailer.

You will want to measure the height of the top of the frame at your axle. On mine, a 4" drop puts the ball head at right around 18", which is where I want to be on my camper. Good luck!

I have Sumo Springs for the rear but haven't needed to install them. Ford's towing package with the built in sway control works almost perfectly.

I hate how the Expedition sags so much in the rear with just about any trailer behind it.

I buy solid Aluminum receiver's for mine, so they aren't all rust after a couple winters.

Same here. The only way to get around it are the Sumo Springs, to reduce spring travel, or a Weight Distribution hitch, to move some of the trailer weight to the front suspension.

I tow a 30' travel trailer with an Equalizer WDH (10,000# capacity bars), works great and has built in sway control. Cost is about $800.

I run a 6 inch drop for my utility trailer which gets it dead level and for my overland trailer a 3/4 inch rise with a max coupler.

I bought me a cheap harbor freight 4 inch drop to pull my 4x8 utility trailer.

It is super loose in the receiver though... Have any of you guys had this problem? Is it because I bought an uber cheap one?

Loose or slop is subjective. Mine moves a tiny bit, normal based on previous experience, but that might be considered loose to someone. It helps to have a tight fitting pin.

Some people weld additional metal on the hitch and grind it until the receiver is tight fit. HF doesn't have the best quality control on certain items, so you may want to exchange it and see what happens.

As previously said, drop is dependent on the trailer you're using. I use a Reese Dual Cam WD hitch. You will not have any sag with a properly hitched trailer.

I can’t stand the rattle of a loose hitch, I’ve had good luck with this as long as you have a long enough receiver to fit it. The locking and tightening hitch pins do a decent job if there isn’t too much slop.

The travel trailer has about a 900lb tongue weight. For that I have an EAZ-lift elite WDH with 1200lb bars, and an aftermarket drop shank from Equalizer. For the utility trailer (and other random trailers), I have one of those cheap adjustable drop shanks that use a couple of pins and cotter keys to change the heights. As for movement, I haven’t had an issue with the trailers, but I do use one with the hitch mounted bike rack and it works great.

Now that you mention it, my bike rack is super loose. I hate it. That part that Artie linked to may be the thing that helps me deal with it.

I think the Expy has a oversized hitch. None of my hitched are loose in my F-150 or Superduty. They are all loose in the Expy. My new hitch mounted bike rack has the hitch that the bold pulled it tight to help with the rattle. It can’t take the slack out of it. Way lame
