This was a very simple and straightforward install and I’m 90-95% satisfied with the results. It was essentially plug and play as all the wiring was present and all I had to do was move the trim and switches from the original to the Raptor wheel. I’m really not a fan of the red stripe so I’m still deciding if I’m going to modify the original wheel to fit the Raptor shift paddles, have the Raptor wheel reupholstered with the tops and bottoms from the original wheel or leave the red stripe and add touches of red to the interior so it has something to tie in with the rest of the interior.

Nice to see the install was easy. I appreciate hearing reports of how easy/hard modifications are. It is good to document it for other things people might want.

I would do the swap simply for the paddle shifters alone. Did you say there is a way to just put the paddles on the platinum steering wheel? That’s probably what I would do.

If I went the route of transplanting the shift paddles into the original steering wheel, I would make templates of the back of the Raptor wheel to trace out the portion of the foam from the original wheel to fit the shift paddles. I’d have to come up with a way to finish the cut edges if I did this so I’d probably try to find another wheel to try this on so if it didn’t work out, I wouldn’t be out my original steering wheel.

How much did you get the steering wheel for?

I purchased it on eBay from FairwayFordParts for $429 shipped.

17 & 18 F-150 OEM Ford Black Leather w/ Red Accent Heated Steering Wheel RAPTOR

Then use the lock out feature like us poor saps with the 6 speed. When I was in the Smokies for a couple of weeks last year I just locked out 6th gear and sometimes 5th and never felt the need to shift it manually. Believe it or not the trans tuning in these crappy 6 speeds is more intelligent then you think

Using the buttons below the shift dial is far from intuitive compared to the F-150 and 3rd gen Expy +/- switches on the shift lever. The lack of good tactile feedback means you have to check how many times the press was registered by looking at which gears are then locked out. I'd say no amount of muscle memory would make it intuitive but enough practice at anything will eventually make it come naturally. The addition of the shift paddles means that locking out the top 3 gears is a simple tap, tap, tap and done. Don't even need to look at the cluster. And when negotiating deep mud and snow while using the Mud/Ruts terrain mode, being in the correct gears is actually easy now and a also a bonus, both hands are on the wheel where they belong.

So you are going to race it like a Ferrari now are you with those paddle shifters? you are just so fancy... paddle shifters in a grocery getter smh..

I learned to drive in the mountains. CA Highway 162 from US 101 to Covelo. The +/- will be useful next trip up there because many automatics don’t allow you to downshift enough and the descent into Round Valley is hard on automatic transmissions. Downshifting with +/- on a 10-20% grade and hairpin turn would be nice to keep both hands on the wheel. Paddle shifters make it more convenient, so I can understand a desire for them. However, even if this mod was available for my third gen I wouldn’t want to spend time or money on it. I also won’t knock somebody for doing it.

I think 11-14’ 6.2L raptor steering wheels would be compatible with a third gen.

I wanted to install shift paddles in our 2014 but couldn’t justify all the extra parts necessary to make it all work so I was excited to install a Raptor wheel in our 2017 because it would just be a matter of the wheel and a couple other little parts here and there to make everything work. Never got around to it though because we had issues with it right from the start.

I haven't read the whole way through so if this has been mention, please ignore it. You can buy black leather dye and just dye the red strip if it bothers you. you can scuff the leather with 1000 grit stand paper apply the dye until you achieve the color you want and then put several coats of paste wax and buff it.

wow.
haters gonna hate. it's his truck; your opinion is your opinion.
Personally, I would do this just because I like the idea of more control without taking my hands off the wheel. it just makes sense.

I already drive my expy like a ferrari. it's an SSV.

Looks Great!!! I would also consider doing this ! How much did the Raptor Steering Wheel cost? Also since you mention its plug and play, did you do the work yourself or had the dealer do it?

If I'm gonna spend over $400 for a replacement steering wheel, I might want the trim to be carbon fiber to match the other accents on my Stealth model. Otherwise, I'll keep mine since it has the matching red stitching on it for the seats.

Looks great.
Did you need a puller to get the old wheel off or was it not necessary?

I think the shift paddles on the wheel make alot more sense than on the console. But with my 5 star tuning I find little reason to use either. I don't. See appearance wise alot of difference.rascist? OMG give it up.
