I saw the following “work to be performed” in a confirmation for an oil change appointment at my local Ford dealer.

“VERIFIED LOCKING LUG KEY RETURNED TO ORIGINAL LOCATION”

Is this in any way related to the lug nut issue?
No.

Why are they working with lug nuts for an oil change though?
Did they take a wheel off to look at brakes?

Usually they atleast will rotate tires during oil changes.

Not where I get my oil changes done --> Valvoline

But I get your point, I think they do that at some dealers, you're correct.

Its a pet peeve of mine. You take your Truck in for an oil change or rotate tires or <various> and they check everything (or claim to) and try to upsell you on a whole raft of things. I don't want the idiots touching any part of the vehicle other than what I asked for and know about! RANT RANT RANT

The last time I went to Mr Tire in Penfield … I was REAL CLEAR. I want these tires off and those tires on and NOTHING ELSE. And I want to get out of here as fast as you can get that done. Well, when they finished … a lot later than I expected and the list comes out. You have a leaking shock and need all new shocks (40K miles on Expy). Your brake fluid is "dirty" and needs to be replaced. We can do a coolant flush and a tranny flush and clean injectors and an air filter and oil change and your brakes are ok but are "almost ready to be replaced". Etc.

That was not only the last time I went there, it will be the last time I go there!!!!

Had my shocks/struts replaced recently and my mechanic showed me how bad mine were. I'm glad he show me; not a single one would fit the OEM lug wrench if I needed it. I ended up using a 7/8th impact socket and a breaker bar to remove them. Only two gave me real trouble, some whacks with the rubber mallet took care of that.

I replaced with this set from Amazon. Got them on prime day. I'm not an expert on lug nuts but they feel very solid, are one piece and stainless steel. They are slightly longer than the originals, but they fit perfectly and do not stick out at all.

Damn Stick, that's EXACTLY what happened to me the last time I went to a Mr Tire.....8 years ago! Never again.....told them fix a tire, NOTHING else b/c I was in a rush to get home to go for a ride....55 minutes later a guy walks in to tell me a "few things he found". I listened then said "but the tire is fixed, right?" We all know his answer so I lit his ass up like he was my whipping boy & for the folks in the building next door, I was surely loud enough for them to enjoy too! He quickly left and 12 minutes later I drove out for the last time.

You would have liked the time I lost it at the car dealer … it wasn't pretty.
Every person in the showroom knew how I felt about the situation!

This is interesting. When I was lugnut shopping I emailed with Gorilla and was told that solid stainless steel is not "strong" enough, so they use hardened steel chrome plated. I didn't know they even made lugnuts in SS. I hope you have good luck with those. SS is more likely to elongate or shear threads under stress than hardened steel but if not overtightened must be OK for this application. I am not a metallurgist but I wish I was!

Those definitely look like solid T304 (aka 18/8) SS. I'm kind of jealous.
No corrosion!!!

Companies tell us lots of things like never to put grease or even wd-40 on lug nuts and studs.
REALLY?? They are just backing off and wheel falling off everyday....right.

No

They claim to have found that you have wheel locks (funky socket shape lugnuts that can't be removed with a regular socket = rudimentary theft prevention system), and that they found the "key" socket for them in your truck --- and made sure to return it to where it was before

...might also just be a generic "don't misplace the customer's ****" reminder if it doesn't apply to you

Will keep you updated, so far, so good!

I didn't realize stainless steel was a potential issue causer. Hmm, I'll keep an eye on it. So far, no backing out on any of them.

I do however have a slight worry about the next time I bring my truck in for a LOF and tire rotation...I don't want the tech to jack up my nice new lug nuts with an air gun and the wrong socket.

I was thinking of buying a little plastic pouch and hanging it from the rear view with the proper socket that came with the kit and a sign saying "USE THIS FOR LUG NUTS!"...maybe including a $10 bill as a please and thank you lol
