I'm with you. I don't want to have to get back in there because my power is cutting out, or the inverter starts smoking.It's really whatever the user is comfortable with. Me I always go overboard; I splice and solder.
I'm the overachiever kid with the volcano project that actually spits out lava LOL
I think I read on one of the Motorcraft parts they recommend stripping back 1", solder the splice, fold it back and heat shrink.
I usually use marine connectors on my automotive wiring because they're made to be watertight.
I'll likely go with something like the attached for simplicity.
