2017 Water Leaks

My 08 Expedition will sweat outside the body, on passenger side behind rear door. I turn A/C not to blow so cold and the sweating stops.


It also will let water inside from front firewall, passenger side during heavy storms when driving. No leak sitting still. I do not drive during heavy rain anymore.


I thought I read somewhere there were problems with water getting into a computer by passenger front door. Might be wrong about what electronics got wet but something electrical by that passenger door.

Ah....mine does that in the same place, on both sides. Its mostly on the outside glass. Obviously, the rubber seal ain't so good there. Here you can see it on the fwd edge of the window.

my 2017 is leaking around the drivers side area and carpet is wet on that side.
i've pulled the plastic trim off the floor areas and dried the water out from the recessed area under the sill plates.
Also blew out the moonroof drains and poured bottled water through them to verify drainage. All is working there.
i have poured multiple bottles of water along the windshield, roof rail mounts and the plastic roof strips covering the side and roof metal joints. nothing
i guess its been doing it since i purchased new last year, i just didn't notice. of course it has 40,000 miles and is out of the primary warranty, so it's up to me to fix.
Has anyone discovered a definitive cause?

Anyone find anything? Seems like a large run of 2017s have water intrusion problems. Would be nice if an owner pin pointed where the issue lies.

Did you see my post above? Mine leaked for a long time before I figured out where it was coming from. One day I just happened to notice a drip coming from the dash at the parking brake handle. It was coming down the back side of the "A" pillar molding and draining into the dash, then onto the floor.

Getting a set of plastic Weathertech mats will help keep the water from soaking the carpet and you'll see it puddled there.

I couldn't find any leaks around the windshield but I removed the outside windshield side molding and reinstalled it and I also pulled the roof rail weatherstrip and the door surround weatherstrip and reinstalled those. I found an area of the door surround weatherstrip on top that was "wedged" open and I pinched it closed again. This may have solved the problem because I didn't notice any water after that. I suspect water got past the door surround weatherstrip, soaked into the headliner, then ran down the inside of the "A" pillar, etc.

Well, I will add to this. No leaks from the roof that I see, but there is water leaking INTO my rear, passenger door. After a good rain or going through the car wash, the door must have 1-2 inches inside of it. Every time I accelerate or brake, I can hear it moving around inside. It seems to eventually drain out after a day or two, depending on how much is in there.

This goes along with the list of issues I have with this truck. I am dealing directly with Ford, but they really don't seem to care too much.

I will post an update once I have one.

It's normal for water to get into the door, it comes from the beltline weatherstrip. There are drain holes to let it out at the bottom but these can get clogged with gunk and debris. Clean them out and you may be OK.

To keep water inside the door from getting into the truck, be sure the inner plastic liner/seal is in place behind the door panel.

I have a monthly subscription to an automated car wash.
I'm going through the wash everyday now, with all the plastic floor trim removed and i cannot find this leak. Sitting in the car with a flashlight while im going through the wash surely looks odd.
i can only surmise that the car wash uses less water than driving in the rain.
i'll keep researching this diligently because i do not want moldy carpet.
the water will fill up the wiring trough under the floor sill plates and slowly leak out through the pinch welds. there are plastic hole grommets in the rear sill but i dont want to leave these out because it will let dirt in.
I did notice that parking brake cable grommet looked slightly asque so i pushed it in to fully seat it in the sheetmetal.

we have been experiencing an abnormal amount of rain

Might sound left field but worth a shot if you are at your wits end.

An aviation forum I follow suggest easiest way to find cabin air & water leaks is to buy a $40 fog machine from Amazon. These are also easy to find locally with Halloween coming up. The fog is produced when water and glycerine solution is heated. Doesn't leave an odor or residue and is safe to breath. Guys are using these in expensive aircraft so I wouldn't think twice about using in a SUV. Might even consider colored smoke if your Expedition is white or silver. Watts range from 400 to 1K.

Chauvet Hurricane 700 is the recommended model for whatever reason. Some say they rented a "professional" machine from a party supply store for similar money. Only need it a hour or two.

I'd try this route if the easier method of applying very sudsy soap to the outside - with the engine running, front and rear HVAC fan on high and in recirculation mode. Bubbles = troubles.

Water in my truck was getting past the weatherstrip over the door and soaking the headliner. This meant there were no obvious drips or leaks that could be spotted while going through a wash, etc. In fact, I had a local dealership try all day to find a leak and they came up with nothing.

Water wicked forward through the headliner. Because it has a plastic backing, the water stayed in the fabric and foam and didn't get behind the trim. Instead, when it reached the "A" pillar molding it ran down the inside of the pillar, into the dash, and onto the floor. That made it extremely difficult to figure out where it was getting in. After I just happened to spot water dripping from the brake release handle one day, I started looking UP at the headliner. That's when I found it was soaked just behind where the "A" pillar molding ended.

Have you checked the AC drain? Had that issue on my '11.

Is it possible that water is getting in around the center brake light mounted in the roof? Or through the screw holes that hold the roof rack to the roof? That's the only place that I can think were water can enter.

Thank you forum for being here. In July 2018 I purchased a 2017 ESPY, with sunroof & roof rack. It is CERTIFIED NEW and has 40,000mi. We LOVE THIS TRUCK!! Drives and rides like a car but and this is big......

IT LEAKS LIKE A SIEVE!!!!!!!!!

I took it on a road trip (got an awesome 18.9mpg) running 75-80 the whole way. Hit a rainstorm and in comes the water. Passenger side A PILLAR, around sunroof R/F quarter, sun visor soggy and dripping water. UGG. MORE TO COME....
9/9 raining hard and roof leaking onto passengerr side A and B pillar, running downa nd dripping, headliner edges soaked. I went straight tothe dealership and talked to Service. they told me as soon as a loaner was available they would get it in. Could be a week or longe
9/12 Third time it leaked MUCH WORSE, sitting still. Water in the passenger side B pillar, seatbelt chase(belt soggy), running out BOTH air vents onto second row seats. Carpet was sopping wet with puddles of water. There was a jacket laying in the back seat and the water and dye stained the back light colored leather seats. Seats VERY wet and the inside windows were soaked to the point that the water was running down them. It was a friday night so service was not open and I noticed it when my husband was released from out patient surgery.



EDIT AND UPDATE....... So the dealership pre-owned service advisor FINALLY called me back this morning (supposed to call yesturday so I called this morning and got his machine)
9/15 Finally got it to the dealership and they began the disassembly. Service guy called me and said it was the seal around the sunroof was DRY AND CRACKED from the hot Texas weather. The car is a YEAR OLD for gosh sakes!!! So seals only last a YEAR??? I seriously doubt that is the only problem however I am crossing my fingers. I am a disabled Veteran with ADULT ONSET INTRINSIVE ASTHMA...mold and mildew is a VERY SERIOUS CONCERN for my health.

I agree whole heartedly. It is rediculous for sure, and what really makes me upset is their lack of concern for the potential problems this could cause later on. Mold, mildew, corrosion, electrical issues, discoloration, headliner failure, leather damage....the list goes on and on. I am not at all happy.

In your climate you WILL have mold, etc. from this. I would start by taking it to a good detailer and have the interior steam cleaned. Once the repairs are done, get a reputable company to do a treatment. This involves wiping down every interior surface with a special enzyme and then running a fog treatment through the HVAC system to clean inside the ducts. I would run the blower on high with the windows down for quite a while before driving it (weather permitting). After that, you'll need to clean all interior glass surfaces as the treatment leaves an oily residue.

Just joined to add my 2017 Expedition had water coming out of the driver side rear air vent today. Was after last night's rain storm. Joy.

EDIT: Bought it used nearly a month ago. It has downpoured since then and I hadn't seen this issue before. There are videos on youtube pointing to blocked drain lines as the culprit. Beginning to wish it didn't have the sunroof. :(

FWIW it's still under warranty.

Currently having the same issue as newownerhere, bought CPO with 23,000 on it, almost exact same timeline. Had it in once, they said it was fixed, it wasn't. I'm thinking I got sold a lemon. Leaks like a sieve and I think it has from day one. Still under warranty but I worry about permanent damage and corrosion. Please let me know if you get yours resolved and I will do the same. Thanks.

For those '17 owners who have this problem, what is the date of manufacture of your Expedition?

I'm wondering if this could be a result some numbnut on the assembly line doing his thing wrong for an hour or two (or more).

5/27/17 for me.
