Looking to get some better mpg from my wifes 04' Eddie Bauer 4wd/Awd that know has 55k on it. I'm looking at the 77 series K&N cold air intake and the Gibson cat back exaust kit. What are you guys running for these two parts? It's probably cheaper to buy a muffler and have the muffler shop burn it in, catbacks are pricey! Thanks, oh, and will throttle body spacer and electric fan work good or bad on the 5.4L Triton? Also want to put in the new E3 spark plugs, anyone have tips or experience with any of this please let me know before I go buy all of this. Thanks

The reason cat-backs work is not just because of the muffler, but because of the mandrel bends in the piping. If you just change the muffler, it might help a tiny bit, but it won't be noticeable.

Don't get a throttle body space. They are useless, unless you just want it for the high pitched whistling sound it makes.

++++ 2 on the tbs. E fans will give you a little horsepower and maybe mpg. They help out by not having the extra rotating mass.

running K&N intake FIPK, Flowmaster exhaust, Superchips programmer VORTEX w/ the
GAS X setting...riding on a fuel tank in the city for a week...normal would be down half a tank...or close to it.

The electric fan is good for highway mpg since it's freeing up some horsepower, and the highway airflow is more than enough to cool the radiator. But in the city, the electric fan will run a lot, and with the a/c on you have to have the fan on no matter what- unless your above 50 mph. So overall the electric fan will help hwy mpg, but not much in the city. (I know from experience)

TB spacer--waste of $(from experience too...)

Cold air intake.....the cooler air requires more fuel to keep the same air:fuel ratio, so CAI = worse mpg. However, improving the airflow after the filter to the throttle body can help the efficiency and improve mpg....For instance replacing the stock piping with one that's smoother flowing will help.

E3 plugs? not sure

Cat back is a good start. My goal is headers, high flow cats, throw away the Y pipe and run both pipes into a 2 in/1 out muffler, with a 3" outlet, 2 1/4 inlets. The factory pipes are horribly bent especially at the "y' portion of it.

Custom tune is always a good mod both for power and economy.

Underdrive pulleys are a simple way to gain power through efficiency, which means better mpg.

If you can find places that sell "Boat gas" or "offroad gas" then you'll definitely gain mpg. That fuel does not have ethanol. Ethanol basically waters down our fuel by 10%, and provides very little actual energy. It is higher octane by itself, but no energy. One gallon of ethanol fuel gives 10% less energy than real fuel. I have a local place I get 90 octane off road fuel, and I get 60 miles extra out of one tank of fuel. Not sure the % gained, but it's about 3 1/2 gallons saved in driving.
