Good morning.

Probably a dumb question, but here goes anyway...

Can anyone provide me with a good quiet (drone free at cruising speeds) exhaust setup? I am looking to gain some mpg's, all be it at a big price to gain little mpg's. I went to a local exhaust shop and the guy wants to sell me a magnaflow #12589 22" case muffler and 3" stainless pipe to the rear. Total would be $445 out the door.

2007 Expedition EL is in stock form. No mods. Possible a tuner in the future.

Has anyone installed a system on there Gen 3 Expedition that was horrible?

Should I just stick with the OEM setup? Thanks gentleman/gals.

Speaking purely from personal experience...I installed 2 different exhausts on mine, much like you are talking about from your shop.
1st one was a Flowmaster 40 series, new tail and tip. At first I liked it, had a lot of bark when the skinny pedal was pushed. But quickly a problem developed when the wife jumped in and we hit the highway. At 70, the drone was a bit too much for her...actually she said you better take care of this. So back to the drawing board.
Enter exhaust 2...MagnaFlow. Can't remember the exact product number but it was similar to the size you referenced. Barely noticeable at cruise, hardly any drone(wife much happier) loud when pushed. I feel it was a good compromise, that and it was SS where the Flow wasn't. Check the members videos exhaust sticky, mines in there.

I'm probably going to go with a Magnaflow on mine when the time comes. But then I have a hook up at an exhaust shop so the price isn't too bad. The only catback I can find for the EL's is from Gibson.

I had Magnaflows on the Cobra for about a week. They were a little louder then stock and I don't remember them really droning on the highway. Probably because I couldn't really hear them. I ended up switching them out for a Mac set up. But I think the Magnaflow will be a good one for the Expy.

Thanks for all the quick replies. Now I have a lot more to think about. Decisions, decisions....and more research.

Went to another local muffler shop and got a quote for $380. Included the same setup.
Pays to shop around I guess.

been to a few shops...sounding like i will lose too much and throw codes for true dual setup...what yall think? if so...SI/DO setup with flow 10 series turned out behind wheels...aluminum $385 (supposedly will last 5-6 yrs)...stainless $500 (supposedly wont have to worry about replacing again)

Don't know how close you are but I had my exhaust done here:

Performance Exhaust Maryland -- MBS is your Maryland source for custom performance exhaust

All custom mandrel bent exhaust from my shorty headers back. Dual 3" all stainless w/highflow bullet style cats. Dual in/out magnaflow muffler and 2 resonators. Stainless V band clamps as well. Was loud as hell till I had the resonators installed. Still loud but not obnoxiously so. My whole setup cost me about $1,200 out the door. Ask for Greg. If you want flowmaster muffs let him know.

As long as your running cats no codes would be thrown. If you install bullet style or eliminate them you may need to turn off your rear O2 sensors in the tune so no CEL is set. The other option is the "non-foulers" or "O2 simulators" installed but cannot comment on the effectiveness of those. My rear O2's have been shut off in the tune from day 1 of my build.

IMO.. based on the displacement and hp level..I would think dual 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" exhaust would work well for you. You may sacrifice a bit of torque down very low but I don't think it would be significant. I would recommend keeping your cats or having the larger variety highflow cats installed. This will help with the bottom end. (torque)

I like Gibson on these trucks. Had one on my 2000 and now another on my 2011. 304 SS so will never have to touch again. Once and done on my 2000 and I doubt that the new owner will have to do anything unless he just wants to.

I've been looking at Gibson for mine. It's on par price wise with what I was quoted by an exhaust shop, but I don't have to make an appointment or take it anywhere to get the work done.
