Before I take my truck to a mechanic Id like to be sure what to watch out for so I don't get screwed. So I will explain my issue.

On Wednesday when I got back to Las Vegas, my ac was working fine, very cold. I have never had an issue with it.
On Thursday I went out to start it and the ac was blowing hot. It doesn't seem like the compressor is kicking in.
I opened hood and it doesn't look like anything was spewing all over the place, belt is tight also.

I understand the first step would be to check the freon level and perhaps add some. Then determine if it gets cold.

If that does not work, what steps should be taken next, leading up to the horrible thought of replacing the compressor?

I appreciate any advice and/or help because I am a handicap woman 60+ and don't have thousands to spend getting this fixed.

Is the number after your name a Schneider driver number?

Go to an auto parts store, ask the clerk if they have a set of ac gauges. If so, ask them if they would hook them up so that you get the low and high side pressures. If you get the numbers we will assume it is hot out and will go from there.

No to the number. It's just a lucky number.

I'll have that checked soon as I can and let you know. Thank you

When my Ac started blowing warm air in the front it was because the AC compressor and the AC compressor clutch failed. It was intermittent at first, then got more frequent pretty quickly.

When the clutch finally failed it was obvious because the serpentine belt squealed since the AC compressor pulley wheel wasn't able to turn.
After I replaced the AC compressor I still had an intermittent AC failure, and had warm air blowing into the cabin. Turns out the electrical connector on the AC compressor was troublesome. I wiggled it a few times and it started working again, but it kept happening, so now the connection is hardwired.

So you could check the connection also. It is unlikely if it hasn't been touched, but not impossible since the AC compressor is low down in the engine bay. It gets its fair share of road crap.

Another thing to check is, is the AC compressor coming on when requested by the climate control system? This is as simple as turning on your engine and looking down deep into the engine bay, the point where the serpentine belt goes on the passenger side, the lowest pulley is the AC pulley. Check to see if the AC pulley is turning upon demand. Switch the AC off and look down at the compressor, the pulley shouldn't be engaged. then switch the AC back on and look again it should be spinning. This can give you a clue if it is the connection, or the computer that is the problem. If it is turning on and no heat, then Freon may be the obvious culprit.

If it's Freon and it went from working to not working overnight, it may have a leak that just adding more Freon to the system isn't going to help more than the drive home.

Good luck.

As mentioned, if it suddenly went from working to not working, I would suspect the compressor is not being engaged, that could be due to a blown fuse, failed Compressor clutch or a defective AC control unit. I would try visiting an autozone first and see what they say, then you can visit a Ford garage and compare what they tell you against Autozone's advise and try to decide if it makes sense. Autozone or any car spares shop should be able to see if the compressor clutch is operating or not..
