I traded my 2001 F150 4x4 extended cab for a 93 Mustang Convertible and a 2000 EB Expedition (even trade) about a month or two ago.
The Mustang was in good shape, didn't really need anything right away. Maybe new brakes because the rotors are warped. But the Expy was a pile of something! The CEL was on but it sounded okay. I knew it needed ball joints and tires. I figured I could fix the other stuff.
It has been smelling like antifreeze. I didn't see any puddles but eventually I could see the leak around the crossover on the intake. I thought it would be a simple fix, new gasket or something. WRONG!
The crossover is bolted on from underneath and you can't get to the bolts. So the whole top of the motor had to come apart. Then when I pulled the crossover off, I found that the plastic intake was broken where the crossover attached. Fortunately Auto Zone had one but it was $250! Ouch. I changed a bunch of stuff while I had it all apart anyway. The antifreeze looked like rust. I flushed it out as best I could. I think I will drain it again later and see if it looks any better. The throttle body was nasty too, I cleaned that up and replaced the EGR. I replaced all the fuel injectors while I was at it. I had a full set for a HO 5.0 I'm building up. I had already changed some of the coils. After a full day I did get it all back together. But I still had the CEL. It was P1131 this time. I cleaned the MAF and so far no more CEL!

I hope so too! My wife wanted it for the seating and I felt the 5.4/4r100 would tow better than the 4.6/4r70W F150. It was working hard to tow my camper. I haven't towed the camper yet, I was waiting to get the bugs out first. I think it's about ready.

I forgot to add that I think it had been repo'ed. It only had one key and no remote/keyless entry. The one key didn't work too well either. I bought a set of keys and locks from a member here. I swapped them and had Ford flash the computer. I also got the keyless entry fob for my wife. I had to take out ALL the accuators and fix them per a thread I found on here because they didn't unlock. Now we can use the keyless key pad, or key fob or unlock from inside and it all works!
I still have a lot to fix, the drivers seat is trashed. The moonroof doesn't work and it leaks and the hose for the rear window washer leaks all the fluid out somewhere behind the front wheel. I also have a bad weather stripping on the passenger door, the window goes outside of the rubber unless you "help" it.
But now I think I can trust it to tow the camper so I am gonna take it camping while we have such great fall weather.

I love the Prestone flush kit for this very reason!
I think it was leaking a long time and they just added water. It rarely gets cold enough to need antifreeze but I'm sure the rust is from straight water. I'm going to have to flush it a few times I think to get it all out.
