Of course they couldn't. How many times fellas has this happened? Have them keep it, it will rear it's head! It's done it a ton of times to you .

Yeah it has, and fairly regularly, so I was surprised to hear that it was working for him.

Go to the shop with your cell phone, record the starting procedure you use. When it acts up you will have proof to show them.

Have you had the battery checked? I had the some of the similar issues including my remote start would no longer work and would just trigger the alarm. 99% of the time the truck started with the key just fine though. I just happened to be at advance auto one day they were checking someone elses battery, so I had him check mine when he was done. The 850 Amp battery had only 390 and dropped to 7V when starting. This was after driving and charging the entire time to the store. While the truck was running, everything checked out ok. Even the slightest extra drain on the battery though would drop it low enough to not even attempt to start. Like one day, all i did was have the doors open for an extended time (20 min) while loading up for a long trip. Just the dome lights killed the battery to a level it was unresponsive.

Haven't load checked it, no, but pretty sure it isn't that. Will keep it in mind though, thanks!

Ok update from my mechanic:

He tested the battery.
He didn't think it acted like a neutral safety switch issue.
He put it on his lift and checked connections at the starter.
He swapped out the PCM relay with the defrost relay, and the starter relay with another lesser used relay.
He checked all the codes, and cleared them. All there was was an antitheft code, which was probably set when I tried to start it with a non-chip key.

Will drive it and see if we keep having problems.

Yeah a bad neutral switch pretty much acts up all the time. If it does it again, try shifting to neutral, if it cranks right up, you found the culprit.

Sounds more like a " I have no idea what is wrong so let's change something" diagnosis.

The new version of the neutral safety switch, the digital range selector, is more complex than the old style. Until you verify operation of the switch by watching it move through the gear selections on a decent scan tool, you have no knowledge of what signal is being sent to the ecm/PCM.

Proper diagnosis includes verifying the suspected failure of components.

He has the latest in scan tool equipment so I'm sure he checked what he could.

Cool thing was he didn't charge me anything. He may be one of the last honest mechanics around. Lol

Update: the vehicle has performed flawlessly ever since we got it back from the mechanic.

He did end up sending me a bill for the work, which I was happy to pay.

So 32 posts later it was from using a non chip key? Mazel tov! Most here go back and forth for at least 60 posts!

Didn't you say in post #27 that it was from using a non chip key?

That was from the one time I tried it with a non chip key. The problem was there before and after I tried the key.

So I'm still waiting for what did he do to fix your problem? It wasn't the key obviously.

Here is what he did. And like I said, the problem existed before and after I tried it once with the non chip key.

It was probably the antitheft code. I keep my non chip key on a separate key fob. I use it when I go to gym, as my door code doesn't always work. I throw my code key along with 8 others in the console. It only takes once for the Pats to think your a thief trying to steal your baby!

Well the problem first occurred with the regular key. I keep saying that.
