Hello all, I am new to the forum as I just became the proud owner of an 01 Expy XLT. Love the truck so far but wanted to ask if anyone had any experience with a rival air filter company, " Speed by Spectre"? They make an air filter very similar to the K&N filter for about 30.00 cheaper...

Thoughts?? Ideas??

copied from another post:

Let's start with the similarities:
*Both filters use an oiled, cotton gauze media
*Both filters use polyurethane frames
*Both filters are cleanable and reusable with similar service intervals. Note that we would never recommend waiting for 50K miles unless you drive in a very clean, dust free area.
*Both filters are tested to ISO5011 standards. We use an outside test lab-in this case, Southwest Research Institute in Texas
The testing has shown that our filters have a 98%-99% cumulative fractional efficiency, which is the percentage of dust particulates that the filter traps. K&N also has a good rating.
Our SuperFlow Flow Bench testing shows us that the air flow between the Spectre filters and K&N filters is virtually the same.
When you increase the air available to the motor, you can pick up both performance and mileage (depending on driving habits). If you purchase a Spectre hpR filter and are dissatisfied with it, give us a call....we'll make it right!

Also look in to AEM dryflow filters, they are suppose to be better then K&N and spectra since they don't have oil to gunk up your system.

Im using the spectra cai and i think that it works just as good as any of the others. Better economy, better throttle response, adds a nice growl under the hood.

I gots me a K&N only because I wanted a nice shiney Chrome tube :)

Now I am trying to figure out how to isolate the intake, so it will suck more cold air vs engine ambient air, without enclosing the air filter...

hmmm....

i installed the spectra intake kit and i was expecting a more throaty sound. didn't get it. i installed a k&n kit on a buddy's 2012 f150 5.0 and at like 4000 rpms it will bust your ear drums. is there anyway to get that sound out of this system or is it just how our intakes are constructed?

does anyones k&n kit make a loud throaty noise?

it has to do with a lot of different things, filter air flow, size of piping, the exact angles used on the piping, and even the type of materials and wall thickness used on the piping. I make diesel intakes, and I switched from mandrel bent steel to mandrel bent aluminum (same diameter, slightly different wall thickness) and it caused a difference in the deepness of the intake and increased the pitch of the turbo spooling up.

The 5.0 is a high compression DOHC motor. Completely different animal. Really dont think it has to do with spectra vs K&N. As said the design of the intake and material used will effect overall induction sound.

Wouldn't mind picking one up for my 2007 Expo, had one on my 2007 Avalance and loved the sound, added power and mileage, but I am unable to find one for the 2007 Expedition??

Introductions and K&N Rival Air Filter

Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never know a intake to "rumble"; whistle, whine and blow-off occasionally but...?

K&N has been around for YEARS... SO they must be doing something right. Then again, are you paying for a name? I think to a point you are, but K&N has proven themselves time after time. Go with K&N.
