I am now the proud owner of a 2000 XLT A4WD Expedition (5.4L, sunroof, leather, third row, power pedals, etc.). It is white with grey interior. I traded in my 1997 Cadillac Deville with 63000 miles for this Expedition. I am new to them as well as the Ford brand. I have looked over this site for a couple days researching real users problems and such with them. Great site guys. I am the manager of a custom car audio/videosecurity store and am more than happy to discuss problems and entertain questions regarding audio/video/security. If you have any questions feel free to PM me. Have a great day guys.

I hope you enjoy your new expedition... you'll find that having an SUV is a lot more versatile then a car. I have a audio question for you, what would be a good brand/model of speakers that would fit in the rear doors, and have some cleaner bass then the stock speakers?

Thanks. I have previously owned a 1997 Suburban years ago and had to get back to the large SUV vehicle again. I am 6'2'' 235lbs so tiny cars don't do it for me. As far as speakers go any 6x8 (5x7 is the same thing regardless of what you have been told, 1/2 all the way around has an inaudable difference) will be an improvement. My two favorite brands that we sell at our store would be Panasonic, Memphis, or Kicker (makinjg a great comeback). I have been VERY dissappointed in the Pioneer and Sony lines over the last few years, too many returns. What level of speaker you decide to go with ultimately depends upon what you are using to drive the speakers, headunit only or an amp. I generally like to go with a speaker you can drive effectively with a headunit (18 watts RMS/50x 4 max) or drive with a small amp.

Some suggestions from the brand above would be the PRC57 (Memphis) or the CJ-DA5723 (Panasonic). Kicker makes an actual 6x8 in the DS line now too (DS68). Any of those should suit you fine. Have a great day.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into those speakers. I used to have 2 12" Kicker Comp VR's but they got stolen out of my car, so now I'm tryin to add some more bass again but without subs that can be stolen easily.

I will have to find out the manufacturer of the box we get for a Jeep Wrangler 1997 and newer. It fits perfectly behind the third row of an Expedition and is a down-firing box. It has 2'' - 3'' legs that raise it up producing better sound and protects the subs from items in that area. It is made for 2 10'' subs with a center port. I will see where we get them and try to provide a link if availiable.

lakmflx, are you running your existing speakers off your head unit or a 4 channel amp? If head unit, be careful adding speakers with regard to lowering the ohm load and burning up your outputs on the radio. If on a 4 channel amp, you should be safe for 2 ohm stereo on the front channels. You will just have to adjust the gains becasue the amp will put out more power at 2 ohms and will be out of balance with the rears (Louder). Good luck and be careful.

Why not get somebody to custom make your box? A well made custom box is going to sound way better then any pre-fab box.

So two idenitcal boxes will sound different if one happens to be a custom box? ;) That is a typical blanket statment I hear way too often, pushed by audio dealers to sell a more expensive box that does the same thing. We build custom boxes at our store and the pre-fab box I am referencing is identical to the specs of one we have built before, plus or minus 0.1 cubic feet. It sounds fantastic as long as you use subs that meet those specs. The problem with some custom applications is simple, no air space. You can't just make a custom box and magically make any sub work in any application. Luckily several subs work well in that box.

I am thinking about putting a single 10" sub in my truck but I want to keep the rear clutter-free. I was thinking that it would be possible to build a box that fits inside the open space on the driver's side rear fenderwell area on the 03 and up Expeds. I would remove the deep pocket and have the sub firing out of this hole with a color matched cloth grille covering it.

Where are you going to put the amp?

I was going to try and figure out a way to use the dead space in the front part of the center console. There is also some room under the passenger front seat. I don't want to loose any usable space for the install.

I'm thinking about making a stealth install so 1) it doen't take up space and 2) it's harder to steal. I wasn't sure if putting the amp under the seat would cause it to over heat.

I have two amps under the seat in my c/c dually, and have had no issues with overheating.
