I have a 2010 Eddie Bauer and I am wanting to put a navigation system in to replace the stock radio? Should I go OEM or aftermarket? I have all the features already available. Steering wheel controls, Sirius, rear DVD, 6 Disc CD, just no Navi. Really would like a plug and play. I bought an aftermarket for my 2011 Silverado I just had and I installed it in 10 minutes. It was easy and worked great. I would like something similar for my Expedition. Any help on this would be appreciated...thanks.

I would say aftermarket. For me, Pioneer or Kenwood. I've had both and they are both great.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. eBay has some plug n plays that are good at around 800 bucks. That is where I got the one for my Silverado. Navi and Satellite radio are a must. I travel a lot and need both. There is a good Kenwood unit I like at Best Buy as well that is around 900(750 plus 150 install). I will probably go with one of these options.

Oem? Aftermarket?

I have had both over the last couple years. I installed an AVIC xx I think it was a Pioneer with the Bluetooth module and the XM module with traffic display.

The single biggest thing for me was that the oem unit screen was much clearer than the aftermarket screens.

I have a new 12 Expy with nav and sync. It is a voice and touch screen hard drive based unit. The factory unit has Sirius travel weather that displays weather radar and storm reports with hail and high wind warnings on screen very easy to operate. It will also list gas prices, movie times, ski locations. You can also send mapquest online to the unit. The media includes a jukebox function that breaks music down by every means possible and displays your pictures as well. The telephone and text and phonebook reading feature is much better with the factory than the aftermarket unit in my opinion. I'm think the aftermarket probably has the same features by now it's just a personal preference in the long run. I like to see the factory finish to the dash and everything else to work together seamlessly like the steering wheel phone and radio controls.
At least go by a Ford dealer and look at the unit first. I think you will be surprised how many features there is.
Good luck.

What is $2K-$3K? I was looking at a new Expedition w/o nav and the dealer was going to charge $200 for installation. I was buying the nav off Ebay for $850. The dealer said all of the wiring was already there. I had my DRL's reprogrammed for $50. Yes there will most likely be some open updates to the SYNC and nav.
But wifey had to have the power running boards that were a package with nav and a roof or something else.

Remember also that a oem nav will add more to a resale figure.

Thanks for all the feedback. The main reason I was thinking aftermarket was because of the cost. I have seen the OEM on EBay for around $850. The only feature I don't have on my 2010 Expedition is the Navi. It has rear DVD, back up camera in the rear view mirror, Sirius, 6 disc and Sync. I am guessing it will just be a plug n play right? All I will have to add is the GPS antenna? If I have all the wiring in my Expedition now, it should just plug right into the Navi unit plus adding the GPS antenna. Anymore info on this would be helpful. Thanks. This forum is awesome...

Call the people that sell them on Ebay and see what they say. The biggest thing I remember was the Sync installation.

Thanks. I will do that. The Sync thing is not really a big deal to me. The stock look when I resell is definitely something to think about. Just trying to keep the cost down, get the best look and if it all possible have an easy install. Plug n play would be great. Hopefully, whichever way I go I will achieve this things.

Can anyone tell me if I go OEM Navigation should I be able to just plug and play? I have all the features in my 2010, but navigation. I am thinking all I will need is the GPS antenna? I am getting mixed answers from all my research.

The people on Ebay told me that they are plug and play unless no sync is there and they have a cable patch now for that. They also said an hour tops for the install. You may or may not have to go to the dealer for the updates. Some updates I have been able to download to a usb driver and stick it in the car. Some updates only the shop can install is what I understand from syncmyride.com. Either way from now on I will take it in for updates which only takes a minute from the dealer so they can check it out other recalls or whatever.
Did you ever call them yourself?

Ok. Thanks. I do have the Sync, but I am not worried about that if it is the only thing that would hold me back from buying an OEM on eBay, adding a GPS antenna and just plugging it in. I may go this route. It is still more expensive though than an aftermarket Kenwood or Pioneer I have found on EBay. You can get a decent one for 450-600 versus 850 for the OEM. Thanks again.

There are several on ebay right now for a 2010, one for $400. "buy it now" several later models for $679. If you do not use Ebay much remember to try several searches with different wording to find all available units.

The ones in the 400-600 range do not have satellite radio. I do eBay and have been looking for a while.

Why would this not be a plug and play if all I would need to add was the GPS antenna? I already have:

-Steering wheel controls
-6 CD disc
-Satellite Radio
-Sync
-Rear DVD
-Back up camera in rear view mirror

I am currently using a Garmin. Navigation is important because I travel a lot. I just want it all in one and if all the wiring harnessing is plugged into my unit already I should be able to just plug in the new OEM Navigation unit and add the GPS antenna. Thanks for all the discussion on this.

OK, I do Ebay as a hobby and passtime and make some money sometimes. I hunt for things I know I can flip real easy that are priced wrong. As of this morning see what came up. Look at: Ford 2009-2013 Hard drive oem gps radio sat $600. Item number 190899860454. Simply enter that number. It comes with the amp, wiring harness and steering wheel controls you already have. It also comes with Sirius Travel Link. Removed from 2013 Expedition!!! Does not get any better than this.
I might buy it myself because he has it priced way to low.
Also look at item number 151119885159. This is an auction that is at $99., BIN for $949.00 for same radio. This gives the Ford part numbers for everything you need and need to know. Very well written ad for Ford Oem Navigation with great description.
Pictures of the connections are very good in this ad as well.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate all the input. I will take a look at all these and make an educated decision on which way to go. I am still on the fence a little. I think I will be ok either way.
