Hello, just a quick history .

Last week , I changed the intake upper and lower gaskets, Throttle body gasket, Waterpump, Thermostat, Fan Clutch, all sparkplugs , replace orings on injectors, fuel pump and fuel filter. I did loosen the EGR tube to get to the plugs and injectors.

Now that everything is back together , I have a ticking, tapping , knocking sound that I cant trace.
I dont know if it because i loosened the EGR tube, if its a valve, lifter, compression etc....

The check engine light did come on saying PO0153 ( o2 sensor circuit slow response bank 2 sensor 1) this was a pending code prior to all the work and there was no ticking /tapping noise.

I decided to do all this work because i was getting bad fuel milage.

I dont know if a o2 senor can cause the ticking noise which gets louder and more repetitive when driving .

the engine runs smoove doesnt shake like a misfire, but does vibrate and stumble a lil bit while driving

PS all the COP are 6 months old with the except 1 of the them ( # 5 cylinder)

i check the ohms on the injectors and all are in specs.

HELP ......

You’re sure you have correct spark plugs? Piston slapping the plug...

have you got a CEL? Could be a misfire and you're not running on all 8 cylinders, I'd check fuel pressure to make sure you're system is working correctly, any chance you put the fuel filter on backwards? Is the noise coming from the front cover (timing chain)? Maybe take a video and share it via youtube

Get a 3' piece of hose (3/8"+) and use it as a stethoscope. As engine is running, with one end to your good ear move other end around the engine (staying safe & clear from the fan) to listen for the ticking in the loudest area. May be an exhaust leak or under valve cover. You can better determine location of tick this way & then plan how you want to proceed (removing valve cover, mirror to check exhaust bolts/gaskets, etc).

I replaced the spark plugs again yesterday with Motorcraft ones. And the ones I have prior were also Motorcraft. I didn’t get a ticking noise until after I did all the work. I just bought a stethoscope today and I will check later to see if I can hearWhere are the ticking is coming from

I'm with Tommy. I think you have a miss. Check your coil connectors. And you say seven of the coils are six months old? Did you get them for $6 each? From China or ebay?

Either do a balance test for a miss or keep driving it hard until it starts flashing the MIL and gives you a code.

No , the plugs are motor craft , I always buy motorcraft . I’ll make the you tube video like Tommie said . CEL is on for po153 . O2 sensor . 7/8 of the plugs are new motorcraft , 8th is motorcraft as well just don’t know how old it is . When I bought the plugs they only had seven in stock .
What is weird , I went home , for 1 hr then left to the store there was no ticking , knocking sound . After 20 minutes of driving it came back . The ticking has been constant for a week except for those 20 min today

4/2/21 update . I used a circuit tester and tested all injectors . They all have power and are pulsating . I disconnected each coil pack one by one . When I got to cylinder #7 there was not change in the engine . I pulled out all the injectors and cleaned them by connecting direct to the battery which opens the valve and spraying carb cleaner through them . They all have a good spray . I pulled out the spark plugs 5-8 and cleaned them even I just put them in on 3/30/21. I even placed the 7 plug where 5 was and 5 where 7 was . The same thing with coil packs . (Swapped 5 and 7 ) . I put it all back together . Turned on the truck and disconnected number 7 again . No change in the way engine is running . . HELP ....!!!???
Does this mean no compression ????? In that cylinder ?? Or can it be clogged with carbon build up after replacing the intake gaskets? Or can it be the egr valve causing a false misfire in that cylinder

Change # 7 coil pak with say #1 or #2 and see if the tick changes position
I swapped the coil pack again with the #1 cylinder . And still the same ticking on the same side , and still no response in the engine when unplugging the # 7 cylinder . The injector has power and wiring for the coil pack has power .

I realize this might not be the answer, but that last time I had the noice you are describing it was coming from a leak on the passenger side manifold. Repair it tapping sound gone. Sounded almost like a bad lifter. Good luck sir!

here is an update. I brought it to shop , There narrowed it down the misfire at cyl 7 , which i already told them that . Then they said the have to remove the valve cove for further diagnosis. So the removed the valve cover they found the lifter was worn/broken and the rocker arm for that lifter needed replacement. ( exhaust side ) . That was the ticking /knocking noise. The replaced those parts . Total of $501 later. They called me and said good news the knocking is gone but the misfire is still there. They said it will be $1600 to take the head off to see where the problem is . Then once they find the problem, give me estimate of how much to repair and put back together. Any of you know Ford specific mechanics that would do side work in Tampa Bay area, ST pete Clearwater , Florida
