Nobody seems to be mentioning that the 9,000lb + capacity requires a weight distributing hitch, right?

I believe my 2011 Expy Ltd with tow package was rated for 5,000lb and 8,200 with WDH. My newer 2017 is rated for 9,200 with the WDH.

Correct, your 2011 was rated at 9,200 pounds with the WD hitch though not 8,200.

After reading this thread, I may not have gotten the deal I thought. Couple of questions. Does the HD tow package change the towing capacity of the Expy? ETIS says my truck has a trailer tow prep pack. What is that? Finally I crawled my fat rear end under truck. Hitch says 9200lbs wdh. Does that mean I can tow up to 9200lbs as long as I am using a weight distribution hitch? It says it comes with Trailer sway control. Where would I find that at? How difficult is it to install that round pluggy thing?

To my knowledge the 9200 pound capacity receiver on the truck is only fitted with the HD tow option. It's the capacity with a WDH. There's a different receiver of less capacity (6600 pounds?) for the non-HD tow trucks. It's also my impression that the round, 7-pole Bargman electrical connector is only fitted with HD Tow.

Trailer brake controller is fitted to late model trucks. Earlier trucks have a connector under the dashboard allowing easy connection to a good controller like Tekonsha Prodigy.

Trailer sway control seems to be part of HD Tow.

The standard Expedition and standard Navigator differ slightly. With HD Tow, though they're set up the same.

(Both my '07 and '17 trucks had HD tow.)

Highly recommend you download the Ford Trailer Towing guide for your model year. Just google it with the year. Has all this info on what equipment is in the packages.

Hey guys, I’m new to the forum here. I’ve been reading questions on the site for awhile now and decided to register so I could hopefully find an answer to my question. I own a 2010 Expedition Limited VIN 1FMJU1K59AEB48123 and it has both the 7 and 4 pt trailer hookups. I’ve read that not all HD towing package Expy’s had 3.73 ratios. Is this true? Does my expedition have the HD package based on the vin? I cannot see what I would consider to be a HD cooler up front. Thanks in advance.

The 2010 Ford Towing Guide <--- that's a link, shows 3.73 axle in NOT part of the HD Tow Package. The axle code is part of the VIN and someone will provide the data (probably while I'm typing! :) ) See page 10 of the guide and note Option 536 (HD Tow). Also see page 14 for more towing data.

The HD transmission radiator isn't real impressive but should be there too in front of all the other radiators.

BTW my 2017 HD Tow has neither limited slip nor 3.73 axles. Hasn't been noticeable at all compared to my '07 which had both features pulling the same trailer.

While Heavy Duty Trailer Tow is available as a standalone option on XLT, according to the Ford sales brochure it is standard on Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum for 2015-17. It is also included in Equipment Group 202A on XLT. So, if the XLT you are looking at has heated and cooled front seats, it should also have Heavy Duty Trailer Tow. Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I’m comparing the HD cooler to the one on my Bowtie brand 2500 with a 6.0. That cooler is massive compared to the one on the expedition.
