What the heck happened to my rotor? And which kit should I get, Detroit Axle or Powerstop?

So, grinding noise from the back, then I see... THIS.

What/huh/what, how does that even happen?

Which kit should I get to replace it, Detroit Axle or Powerstop? Or is a 3rd reasonably priced alternative preferred? Thx.

How does the rotor on the other side look? If it is not wearing evenly, maybe check the calipers, pins, and brake hoses.

It looks intact.

Couple scratches and some rust, but it's ROUND and it's, like, ALL THERE.

I changed all 4 rotors and pads to Powerstop Z36 and worked great. We tow a 3800 lbs camper and boat with good results. About 30k miles still going strong.

On topic of detroit axle - purchased a set of their strut assemblies, had shipped to house. They sent me parts for a different application than I purchased. Got that straightened out, but a year later one of the springs cracked, so I had to replace again. One person's experience, but that was a crappy experience to be able to install junk parts. I'll not buy from them again.

I would only use Motorcraft rotors, but some folks like PowerStop. Check that caliper too... it may have overheated or overextended. Since you haven't looked at those brakes in 15 years, you may want to look at the hoses too.

I've used detroit axle parts before on my in laws old tahoe, not worth it, they last about a year before needing replacement. I just use duralast rotors and duralast gold brake pads, usually last 4 to 5 years even with my hard driving.

Did you wear all the way through the disc to the ribs separating the inner and outer friction surfaces? Looks like it.

I had Powerstop pads and rotors on another vehicle and highly recommend them. Follow directions on breaking in the new rotors and pads, they’re excellent especially if you’re towing a boat or rv.

The only way for that to happen on only one side is a severely sticking caliper.

My 2016 EL I installed power stop and they have been wonderful. I have confidence when I need to hard brake. I needed to replace my factory calipers due to a blown boot on one of the pistons. So I replaced both at the same time and they now grab nicely.

Looks like your caliper got stuck or the pads disintegrated and it ate through the whole front rotor surface into the cooling veins. You should probably replace both calipers when doing the rotors and pads. One of those good preventative maintenance things. Don't cheap on brakes, it's the one thing keeping you safe when it matters most. For me it's my wife and 4 kids, and I need to know when I'm not there, that she can stop the beast on a dime. Hope everything works out!

I've been very happy with Duralast Gold rotors and Duralast Elite Ceramic pads on my '03 (installed Sept 2015!) and just did the wife's '16 last month. I've put over 50k miles on the '03 Duralast brakes.

When I tried to take it off, it started falling apart and spit out the piston, so I ordered new calipers for ~$110 instead of risking it.
