I stay away from discussions involving unions and especially GM workers. I piss off enough people with my other comments. I even worked at the S10 truck plant in Moraine Ohio for summer college help back then.
We had a 74 Vega I think probably in 81-83 and the frame or whatever it had, had already rusted out in the rear and the axle is ready to fall off.
We sold it to my uncle for cheap and he cobbled and welded it up so he could drive it back and forth to work. Then later he had a 76. Ours was a station wagon his 76 was the hatchback.
I had a buddy that I met from hanging out the car shows and racing up and down the roads that had a Monza with a 305 in it that was a screaming little car. That was around 1990. Then around 1996 a friend of mine baby sister had an old Monza with the 4-cylinder in it I think. I had to doctor it a couple of times on the carburetor and timing to keep it drivable for her.

I remember watching the TV program about the history of the automobile a few months back. They rushed both the Vega, the Pinto, and the Plymouth cricket to market. All 3 of these were rushed to market to compete with the Japanese. We had our oil embargo in 73, doubling fuel prices. Owners of gas guzzling V8 cars, wanted something better, more fuel efficient. It was sad the shortcuts that the big three did to get them to market. I didn't know about the rust issue on Chevy's. Wonder if they'll come a day that the metal can hold up to the salt on the roads or in the air around beach areas. Ever see a 10 year old car in Maui? It's a rusted bubbled up mess.

There you go. At least this one was on course with the title, just 46 years off target. It's kinda still about oil and cars. We usually get so far off the original thread, were talking about religion or politics by the 30th post or so.

I just did my own head gasket and i am very happy with it however in hind sight i would have a shop do it. I knew timing was a concern and i still had to take it back apart and reset the timing. Mark the chains as you take them off at the cam marks. Its not set with crank at the top its 11 o clock with a special tool to set the crank at tdc. I took pictures and i still manages to be 2 teeth off on bank one. Its worth 2000 bucks to have it done right. You should see the pictures of my pistons. You will be happy when its done. I spent almost as much including a month worth of uber rides. I did learn a bunch. Lifting the wires off the pass side valve cover bc they attach behind the block. Theres a bolt on the back side of the pass side head for the water pipe and electrical wires. I bent the pipe removing the head because i didnt know of the bolt in the back...
