Actually there are two thickness for the 15+. You can get the maximum payload package on the 5.0L or 3.5L which includes a thicker frame.

Interesting! Had no idea! I thought the towing packages were other changes.

Looks like there are actually 3 frame thickness designations. LD(.087), HD(.1), and HPP(.11).

https://madocumentupload.marketinga...56628030a9217072aaf51ad822824be983a7&v5=False

Also, the engine does not determine the frame thickness. Without seeing the rating or the sticker on the frame, no way to tell for sure.

Correct, however the thickest designation has “HD” on the white sticker under the truck. This frame is rarer but according to Ford documents is only available on 5.0 and 3.5 trucks equipped with MP. The 3.3, 2.7, and 3.0 PS were excluded from max payload package last I checked (2019 Model Year). Note Max Tow and Max Payload are actually entirely different packages. Max Tow is more cooling and gearing based , Max Payload is more suspension and frame.

The 2.7 has a payload package also. That gets it in the HD frame range. There are several images on the 150 forums with 2.7’s and PSD’s with HD frames. Even Crewcab 2.7’s with the HPP frame. Seems the Max payload is what determines it. Thanks J07! Learn something everyday! Yet another tangent in the thread!!!

There is a 2.7 Payload Package, but not to be confused with Max Payload Package. Ford is confusing on this, but there is a 3.0 PS Payload Package, 2.7 Payload Package. And then the Maximum Payload Package for the 5.0 and 3.5. There is a significant difference, that max package on the 5.0 and 3.5 can achieve almost 3,000 pounds in payload. The other engines packages don’t get to that capacity.

Have to say the 2.7 is an impressive little engine, I think it would be Perfect for the Ranger Raptor if it comes to the US. I will say even though it’s faster unloaded and spools up faster than your 3.5 there is something to be said for the 3.5 torque. Under load the 3.5 EcoBoost shines.

It’s kind of the same deal on the naturally aspirated front with the 5.4L Triton vs 5.0L Coyote. My friends 2011 5.0 will leave my Expedition in the dust empty....but towing the 5.4L runs easier and has more low end power. 5.0 seems to rev more under strain. I think it’s similar between the two EcoBoosts, empty the 2.7 flies but load her up and the 3.5 is easier to handle. What have we learned? Catch cans are good and lots of other unrelated info...

Well this has certainly been entertaining.

Guess I’ll order my catch can....wait never mind. I can’t because the state I live in has a stupid board that prohibits the sale of many modifications which deal with “emissions”. Oh how I hate you CARB.

Anyone have an address I can use? I’ll buy you a six pack lol

Hoping to put in a catch can for my expy this coming month. I watched a video of the 2.7 eco, 3.5 eco, and V8 F150’s competing pulling max weight and the v8 didn’t even compare. Then they tuned each of the three and pulled again. The v8 was destroyed by the eco’s. The 2.7 actually ended up dropping the driveshaft. Not bad for teeny weeny motors.

Put that catch can on there! The carbon buildup problems for earlier model ecos with mileage ( all ecos for that matter) are extremely expensive to repair. Requires tear down and lots of labor to clean valves. Buying a new head may be the better solution to consider.

If you ever have cold start issues ie misfires you know the time is near, very near.

Luck onya.

HAHA, You REALLY do not want to start talking Degrees, Certs and experience with me. You will lose.

I understand that this is a thread about Catch Can’s, and all you can do is come in it to bash the EB, without providing any valuable information. You tried to say that was why you would not own an EB equipped vehicle, yet every engine you mentioned until the 7.3 also has DI and issues with Carbon buildup made better by a Catch Can. Then you threw out a Motor designed for a completely different use case that will NEVER be in an Expedition. That in the Future will most likely also have DI, and could like mentioned above still benefit from a Catch Can.

It is very clear that I understand WAY more about how these things tick that you EVER will. Please keep responding. It just proves my point even further. I’ll be waiting.

Ok Einstein. I’ll spell it out since you can’t comprede my point.

Catch cans are necessary in the first place on ecoboost engines due to DI which is a flawed design FORD adopted. ( nobody said that design is new).

To make matters worse, FORD installed these flawed engine designs on their F150 TRUCKS. ( we all know they installed on other model cars but this is a truck forum).

In addition to the DI issues the VVT design is also a problemo. Many of us who read know this.

Now here’s the kicker... my point... because of the above FORD f’d up further by using twin teeny turbos on a small displacement block in a TRUCK(which is different from a car).

The reason all this is f’d is many F150 owners tow their toys behind their trucks ( again, vs cars).

So you see Einstein, when you add all this together you end up w a f’d up TRUCK.

Ecoboost = teeny displacement + VVT + DI + teeny TT + TRUCKS and TOWING.

All this is NO BUENO. Comprende?

The catch can issue addresses the carbon build flaw but that’s all it does. It don’t fix stupid ... as in the design of the power plant overall.

Yes, every time there is Carbon Buildup you MUST replace the head. Please listen to Machete...he definitely knows what he is talking about! There are no other ways to clean it, just replace....

I see now. How could I have not understood...OMG! I see the light, and I must get rid of Both of my EB SUV’s!

Already made an appointment to look at a Yukon this evening to replace my wife’s Expedition! Not sure what I am going to replace my Edge with? I was thinking a BMW X3 M40i, but then I realized it has DI and Turbos!!! OMG, what am I going to do? Machete, please tell me what to buy...I must have your guidance.

OH Dear! Guess I should go get an Armada or a Sequoia, but I just read that they both are DI, and the Toyota has DUAL VVT? According to Machete that is bad! In this case it must be 2 times as bad.

Guess it is Horse and Buggy for me!

Yeah, but think of all the PC check boxes you could fill.

I'd like to see how it does while fording a stream or a flooded road.

You should take your carbon buildup eco for one of those BG intake cleaning jobs. Hehehe.

Report back on how that worked out. Hehehehe.

HaHa.... This coming from a guy who has never messed with an EB in person, just knows how to type on a computer.

I have used the CRC Branded Intake Valve Cleaner more than 10 times on 8 EB vehicles. Once each on my my 2 current. Once on my 2015 that was totaled. The rest on vehicles experiencing issues of excessive buildup. 2 of those on 2013 F-150 Work trucks, with over 175K in hard miles that had never had it done. Used 1 can on each, got better, Changed plugs, replaced a questionable plug wire on one, and did another cleaning about 5K later. They picked 2 MPG average back, and are both over 250K now. The owner puts a can through following the instructions to the letter every 15-20K. Hasn’t lost anymore MPG. All the others I have done have only had positive results.

You truly have no clue.

Please keep going....this is fun. Not sure everybody else is enjoying it though.
