It depends on how many studs are broken and where they broke. I had a leak in that same place on my excursion but it didn't drip and I could smell it now and then. I knew it was a machining problem with the modulars so I wasn't even considering fixing it. When it ruined my starter the aftermarket replacement was fully sealed so problem solved.Wish I could have found someone here to do that job for $600. They were talking $1800 in labor.
What finally did in my 2000 was a head gasket oil and water leak over the starter at 260,000 miles, a known Ford machining problem. Would have kept running if not for that.
