Picked up 19 platinum 4x4 two weeks ago. I'm freaking out. - the computer says I'm averaging 11.7 mpg - this is my wife's car and she does not even know how to put the thing in sports mode or turn off the start / stop feature and she does not speed - pick up kids drop off kids - every time I get in the car the gas is down huge - I traded ina MB GL 550 (twin turbo v8). With 305 22 tires and we were getting about 16-17mpg - if these numbers are real - Fors is going to have problems - class action if they stay around these numbers

I’m thinking of going to a 550 once the new model is out. How did you like it?

I'm sure the tuners are pushing the limits of the A/F ratios and such to achieve maximum performance and milage whereas the manufacturer looks at prolonged life to save their wallet from warranty claims.....

Well, lean burn technologies maximize fuel mileage, best fuel economy happens at about 15.4:1 air/fuel ratio. Maximum power occurs on the rich side of stoichometric (14.7:1), at about 12.6:1 air/fluid ratio. I'd rather not sacrifice reliability in the name of power or fuel economy.

I'm quite happy with the stock tune. I rarely put my foot in it, but it's pretty quick when I do. And I'm more than pleased with the fuel economy.

Just picked up 19 Platinum Max 4x4 as a rental flipped over to trip computer and found it's getting according to the computer 19.7 mpg over the last 4K plus miles. That's incredible for this vehicle as a rental. I bet no one is using 93. I'm putting 87 in it and was not instructed to do otherwise.

Well, i am seeing your threads and being shocked at how low my MPG is!
i have the 2018 XLT 4X4 with the tow package (3.73 ratio i believe). the 1700 miles on that truck averages at around 14.3 MPG city and 17.5 MPG HWY, which is not far from the OP. maybe because it is still relatively new, but the discrepancy in the numbers i can see is huge! most are averaging at 20-22 which is awesome, but some like me can only see the above mentioned numbers.

how did you all broke in your cars? maybe that is why we see all these differences.

This mileage seems about right and is similar to our 2018 with HD tow package while running 93 octane. My lifetime average over 10,000 miles is 19.5 mpg. Just got back from an 800 mile trip on relatively flat interstate and averaged 22 mpg for the trip. Overall, very pleased with the mileage for a vehicle this big.

Mines was like this until about 4-5k. It was hard to get the epa numbers on mines unless i was goin bout 50ish. Anything over 60, mileage would dip to high teens. But as time went on and summer time came, mileage went way up. Now at 25k, it easily hits 23+

We did a 1500 mile road trip last week and I got around 21. I have 20k miles. But my lifetime avg is about 16mpg so it’s definitely improved over the life of the vehicle. Running 93.

with these comments i can restore some confident in ford then. we had the 2012 triton 5.4L before i got this one and the MPG on that was much better than what i am getting now. hopefully the new EB will get me 22+ on highways in the future as that would be my most time spend with the expy.

It's the stop and go that kills you. Out on the open road you shouldn't have trouble seeing higher numbers if you drive even remotely reasonable

Different terrain different driving styles there are a bunch of variables. These aren't Priuses folks, and would you want your families in one of those electrified garbage cans in an accident? I installed a 5 star tuner yesterday and ran across state in the performance mode. I got 24 mpg calculated by me. And that's darn good in my book. Maybe some adjustments in driving styles would help.

We can’t forget the main epa numbers advertised are often times the best ones with 2WD and a highway cruise gear ratio.

A 5.4 Triton with 3.31s and 2WD was rated up to 21 MPG in a standard wheelbase....if you go to a new 4WD long wheelbase with towing gears well....it’s not the best comparison in favor of the new one. As mentioned the driving has a lot to do with it too.

I have 4700 miles and do 70/30 Intown to Highway. My average is 17.8 from day 1. Regular 87 gas. The last 1000 miles intown I have been using the Eco Mode to see if it helps. To early to say. I also do not use the auto stop/start feature.

Mine only has 1800 miles on it, but its life average is 19.9 and that's mostly short trips into town to work and back and doing at the post office and such. I'm VERY happy with that on 3.73's!

My wife's '18 XLT is just over 3k miles now and she is averaging 18.4. Her driving is probably over 90% in town with only an occasional highway run. She does drive very conservatively, but I am still quite happy with that kind of mileage considering the size, weight and power this vehicle has.

OK! something has to be wrong on our 19 platinum 4x4. I just checked the screen last night - here are the numbers from new (o miles)
2087 miles
avg speed 22 mph
avg gas mileage 11.7 - that is f****ing terrible!! I traded in a MB 550 twin turbo V8 that was getting about 17. This car is drivin by the wife, back and forth from school and basic around town stuff - hence the 22 MPH average. I only drive it on the weekends. It is always in normal mode in 2H. in Socal with 91 gas. What do you guys think? When I picked up the care the tank was full and it had 345 miles to empty above the gas Gage - now when i fill up it says 271 mile to empty - what happen to that 73 miles?

Thats totally believable to me. Short trips, stops, starts, etc all cost fuel. Its a big heavy vehicle, it takes energy to get it moving each time.
Mine sucks a lot of fuel in town if I don't baby it. I run it easy and mix in some highway driving here and there and its close to averaging 20 mpg. Time to concentrate on easing into the throttle or just paying the pump.

Idle time, short trips and getting into the boost from stop & go, kills MPG. Like a previous poster said, it takes a great deal of energy to get a 5,793 lb vehicle moving from a dead stop. If I got your Mercedes model correct it weighs 4,773 lbs. Add a 1,000 lbs of weight to the Mercedes and see if it still gets better gas mileage in the same driving.

I still have the 19 as a rental as some texting idiot rear-ended my 17 and it's in the shop waiting on a back ordered exhaust. I can see where the potential for getting worse gas mileage can happen. The 10 speed transmission system is very responsive and really makes the 19 feel quicker than the 17 (plus the lighter weight from the Aluminum panels). Any need for acceleration and that transmission responds by dropping gears quickly. Then let off and back up the gear it goes. It's nearly seamless. I am very impressed and pleased with it but if you like to go fast it will easily and eat up your gas mileage. Does the wife like to put the pedal to the metal? Eco or Boost, her choice.

If your wife is like a few of my friends, they drive conservatively when hubby is in the car and are race car drivers on their own. How about you drive it for a week to see if the MPGs are the same? If so and you drive conservatively than you may have a problem.

Edit: this is in "Normal" 2wd mode.
