Thinkin about doing an exhaust system on the expy and I was thinking about cutting the muffler out and leaving all 4 cats in. I can get it done around here for 50-75 bucks so it would be REALLY cheap to do. Thoughts ideas, etc I want to hear what you guys think about this before I go out and do it

if you are going for noise ok, not sure if you will get any performance out of it.

Cat or not

If you were to remove all 5 cats and re install just the O-2 sensors....would this trip the Check Engine Light?

I think we only have 4 cats and i alsothink that the edge may be able to fix that for you since it'll run lean or ritch if you do. I am going for noise but i wanna leave the cats in so that its not real straight pipes. I like the idea of removing the y pipe and just leaving it cut riggt there but wont that make it super loud? I would think that if i had tubes going fro
The y pipe all the way back it would deepen the sound. Cprrect me if im wrong on any of this

I double checked I have 2 on the left, 2 on the right and one before the muffler... California emissions...Good point about the edge though...

Never heard of one before muffler. Must be a Cali thing. If you remove the front cats it will trip the CEL. You would have to turn off rear 02's in the tune. Vehicle will run fine otherwise as it uses front O2's for tuning.

From my research on this subject, removing the muffler is going to have a negative effect on the performance of the truck in most of the range that you are going to use it. By removing the muffler, you are dropping the back pressure which is great for releasing power. So, yes, you can get a lot more power out of the engine by doing something as simple as getting rid of the muffler. Obviously, this is going to result in a louder exhaust note.

The downside to this is that motors require back pressure to develop low end torque. So, this mod is great for when you are opening up the throttle and hitting 5,000 RPM. But, if you want something to get off the line with at say 1500 RPM, this will kill that part of the power curve. Installing something like an Edge programmer may help restore some of this power loss, but it won't replace it all. You may even see a slight drop in your mileage as the motor still can't develop enough back pressure up at highway cruising speeds (more of an issue with non-Cali emission vehicles).

If you stick with the stock 2.25" single exhaust pipe, this will also offset this to a degree (provides a certain amount of restriction due to the limited pipe size). But, if you open up the exhaust by going to say a true dual 2.5" setup or a single 3" setup, you are again asking for problems.

There is no "perfect" exhaust system. It is a balance between compromises. So, how do you use your truck? Me, I would never consider this sort of mod as I want all the low end grunt I can get. Hence why I have gone with a 70 series muffler but a true dual setup. This allows me to pull Volvos sideways on asphault (should have seen the kids face when I did that).

Well thermo i usually listen to everything you say but dosent most of the back pressure come from 4 catylic converters lol, and its either cut out the muffler and replace it with pipe or cut out the rear cats amd the muffler and replace the muffler with a glasspack (which is pretty mucha straight pipe) i would think that the GP option would reduce back pressure even further... Correct me if im wrong on this. I will be doing one of those two this week and if it turns out that there is a significant loss in low ebd torque then ill just swap the pipe out and put a super 44, im looking for noise. Not performance. My expy never sees anything north of 3grand on the rpms so i have no real need for added performance in any powerbands
