That’s the same bolts I have. They are beefy. If I would have gotten the Yakima. I wouldn’t have even know what they did. As they would have installed it all. I would get 4-8 of the Yakima ones then you can tie anything down and leave the big ones on the corners. It would be cool the leave all your gear on the rack and lift it to the ceiling. The factory bars look like plastic, but there some kind of pot metal. A magnet will stick to them but not very good. They would be fine for ski racks and things like that. A loaded platform they move to much. I think I mentioned the mounting clamps for the stock rails would hit the glass on big bumps. I can’t wait to see how it looks with your gear on top and the new trailer. Baller, prepper, survivalist, adventurer.

I have a trip the first week of May and there will be a canoe up there. I didn’t know the factory rails are some kind of metal. That being said, I prefer my current setup versus using those... I’d rather not have a failure.

So I picked up the Yakima LockNLoad Platform (60x54 size). I used the clamps to mount them to 2 of my 3 existing Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Stealth bars (very low profile). The front of the platform ends about 12-15" from the rear of the sunroof opening based on where I have my cross bars mounted. I also ordered the Yakima SkyTower feet, and might give those a shot instead of the cross bar mount. I am curious if having the platform sit a couple inches taller would make it louder or quieter. What is interesting is that the Yakima documentation stated that if you use 3 or 4 bars, or 3 or 4 pairs of Feet, you greatly increase the load capacity of the platform; however you can not order any additional mounting blocks (the blocks are the interface between the crossbar clamps & feet with the platform itself). I have reached out to Yakima about this, and they are working on a solution. Just be aware that if you order the cross bar clamps, they ship in pairs, not a set of 4!

With the cross bar mount I had to move the platform forward about 4-6" from where I wanted it due to the OEM mounting feet for the OEM side rails (if you look, the middle mounting location on the FX4 is beefy, and takes up a lot of room). I would imagine that with the SkyTower Feet you could move the platform back enough to allow the 80"x54" platform to still end right around the rear of the sunroof opening on the MAX trucks, but I haven't measured it to be certain. the 54" width is perfect and lines up nicely with the width of the roof.

The platform was light enough that I was able to lift it up and get it onto the truck solo, but a 2nd person would definitely help if you live in a quarantine free sector of the country lol. If you are gonna use a cross bar rail mount, I would recommend mounting it onto the bars while it is on the ground, then lifting the entire platform w/ bars, onto the roof. I did not do this because I wasn't sure if I would be able to access the locking mechanism of my bars with the platform installed up top - turns out I can access everything just fine and this would have saved me about an hour and lots of cursing and spilled beer.

Using the cross bar mounts it sits pretty close to the top of the OEM FX4 side rails. The platform itself seems very well made, and comes with a rigid plastic chin spoiler to help reduce wind noise and whistling.

Using Decibel Pro on my Iphone I am coming in right around the same levels of interior noise that I was running just the bars (around 95-105db @ 100mph, 85-90db @ 85mph - yes I am aware that speeding is illegal Mom), however the tone of the wind noise is slightly more noticeable. It's not a whistle or anything at all....just a constant white noise of wind rushing; similar to the interior of an aircraft cabin I suppose. It nothing that bothers you, and within 30 seconds or so of getting up to speed you don't even notice it if you are listening to a podcast or music, but I have the volume up 1, maybe 2 clicks, from where I was running just the bars (I was listening around an "8", and now use "9" for music and "10" for podcasts). It's definitely quieter than running my Thule 1600 box up top.

What was somewhat surprising is that I appear to be down about 1mpg from just the rails. I was not expecting that. Granted, I've only put on about 500 miles, up to my place in VT and back to NJ, but I was a full highway MPG lower than I was the week prior with just the bars (cruise control set for the Highway).

Ultimately, I would like a flat platform with a mesh base (look at the ARB roof racks) and self contained cross bars. This would allow me to possibly build a custom mount to the stock side rails to minimize height. Also, the mesh would allow me to use my bungees wherever I need them and if I do need to mount a eye bolt or something, I can just use a couple of 1 inch washers to sandwich to the mesh. Ideally, front and side removable rails would be a bonus.

Most likely I will need to either see if any of these companies can build one to my spec (since none have any to fit an Expedition) or find a fabricator to build one for me.

Check out Gobi Racks. The rack for the F150/Raptor is 61"x51" i think, and has an all mesh base. Gobi racks are the best. If you break that thing you've probably rolled your truck lol. I'm sure you can find a local shop that can figure out a mounting solution for the expedition.

Feel like the mesh would REALLY hold the snow and ice more though? Dirt, leaves etc too? Agree the look is nicer though and love those rails.

Looks good. Without buying the add on rails and tie down hooks are there holes or whatever to connect bungees or cord to for tie downs? Curious why you didn’t go a little bigger size...sunroof?

How high is it from the top of your rails to the bottom of the platform? I would like mine to be a little lower, but not much more with my awning.

I get it. It is way easier to tie stuff down with the mesh than with the rails. I had a bunch of T-slot accesories already, plus I was just too damn lazy to work on a mounting system for something like the Gobi or ARB.

The yakima has T Slots that I can use to slide in various mounting options.

As for why I went with the 60x54 size and not the 80x54, mainly it was because I simply didn't have the need to secure anything that long, and I had 2 concerns - wind noise and light blockage. I figured the further from my head, the less I would notice the noise, I didn't want the leading edge of the platform to go in front of the sunroof opening, and I didn't really want to cover the panoramic glass too much either since my son likes looking up through it. As it is right now, I have 15" from the front edge of the platform to the rear of the sunroof opening and only about 6" or so of the panoramic glass is covered. Because of my cross bars, the rack is probably about 6" further forward than I originally intended, which is why I ordered the Yakima Skyfeet mounting system. The platform utilizes 4 mounting blocks (they are connected on the underside of the first 2 and last 2 cross rails), but those can slide the rail attachment point front/back. This should allow me to move the platform rearward a bit since the feet mount around the sides of the rails. If you zoom in on the side pictures you can see how wide the central OEM side rail mounting is - that is what made me move the rack forward. The 80x54 platform wouldn't have this problem, however it would cover the 2nd Row panoramic glass completely, and If you don't care about blocking the light into the 2nd row, than it's the better option.

The bottom of the platform is 2" from the top of the OEM side rails. The top of the platform is about 4" from the top of OEM. I am guessing, that with the Feet, those numbers will increase slightly from my stealth bars.

This expy has my favorite roof rack setup I've seen. It's a custom one by lge_ctsmotorsports that us so clean. I'd love one like this with a removable mesh panel or 2 that fit between the cross bars. You could take them off to uncover the panoramic roof during daily driving and put them back for loading up gear.

Thanks, make sure you post pics on how those feet work. I think I’m 4” with the HD Yakima bars. Rail to bottom of the platform. I may have a fab shop built me bars that bolt into the factory crossbar holes and have them add a bar in the center. We will see, spent to much on it as is.

I love the bumper and rack. They said they would built them for people. They have two of them. The classic (one pictured) and the Baja Forged. If I remember right they don’t have the sun roof. The Baja Forged was a two wheel drive. Not sure on the classic.

I love the bumper and rack. They said they would built them for people. They have two of them. The classic (one pictured) and the Baja Forged. If I remember right they don’t have the sun roof. The Baja Forged was a two wheel drive. Not sure on the classic.
