Popping Noise From Rear A/C Blower '03 Expo

Rear A/C Actuator

It's called a rear A/C actuator that is causing the clicking noise. These go out over time and you should have two of them. Both located in the rear next to the third row seat on the right side. I just got done changing mine out a few weeks ago. Fairly simple to change once you get around the side panel.

I replaced both of mine about six weeks ago. I already have to replace the unit which controls roof/floor. It's Dorman part 604-213. Luckily it has a warranty, so I'll get a new one from Advance, but based on my experience I would not recommend the Dorman brand. YMMV.

I just replaced my acuator not even a month ago and the clicking has returned!!!! I'm sooo pissed! Is there a permanent fix for this issue or am I just stuck spending money on actuators once a month??? To be honest I dont even need the floor vents in the back seats so if there was a make shift way to keep it blowing just from the overhead vents that would be great instead of it being so damn tempermental!

If you just want air to come out of the roof vents, put the control into that position, then when you get air out of the roof vents and the clicking starts, just unplug the actuator..Voila! No more clicking. I did this on mine until I could install a new actuator.

+1. I also just want mine blowing through the roof vents, so I simply rotated the control to that position and removed the actuator. If it was in roof position I could have just as easily unplugged it, but it was on the floor position so I had to remove the three screws holding it in place to back it out enough to rotate the shaft to the correct position, so I removed it.

Update: this does not work. The damper, with the actuator arm removed, was left free to rotate and moved back to the floor position on its own. I'll need to freeze/glue the actuator arm in position and then reinstall it to hold the damper in place.

If the banging noise is coming from the right rear wheel panel area, it is probably the " Rear Blend Actuator". It sounds like a door trying to constantly open or shut. That happened to my 2003 Expedition in 2011. The part number was ' YH-1767 " YL5Z-19E616-AA
You have to remove some trim. If you have small hands the unit can be unbolted and squeezed out. If not, a lot of the trim must be removed including the upper seatbelt bracket.
