I just sold my 2005 Ford Excursion with 6.0 turbo diesel. I bought a 2017 Expedition EL. Size does matter!

The Excursion was wider and longer as witnessed by how much room i have in my garage next to my Mustang. The Excursion I could only open the driver door half way. The Expy I can open all the way!

I did get about 21MPG on the highway which was impressive. The only bad thing about the 6.0 was the EGR, variable vanes inside the turbo and head gaskets. I was able to delete the EGR and didn't have an issue with the head gaskets because I didn't add 40 lbs of boost with a tuner. The turbo on the other hand. The unison ring that allowed the variable vanes to open and close would rust in less than 10 days if you didn't drive it. With the vanes sticking you would get under boost and then a check engine light.

While I miss the size of my Excursion I will not miss the turbo rusting up. What a PITA!

Does anyone else think the Platinum Expy is a “younger look”?

Yes^ I don't like the Navigator at all too bubbly. The expy looks younger and sportier. Same as 3rd gen expy vs Navigator. I can't stand the current ones taillights/headlights.

Platinum on order. We’re in our late 30s and both of us looked at the Navigator styling and didn’t like it. The Ford styling “felt” more us and more aligned with our young family of five!

Congrats! Out of curiosity, did you order the second row captains seats to keep the kids spread out or did you get the bench? I’m always interested in other dads’ thoughts on this.

Im not a dad but i getting a bench. The cpt chairs is very nice and i still hate the fact that ford refuses to put an armrest in the center section. For a young or new family the sliding middle seat and the extra seat itself is more than enough reason to get the bench.

Definitely the bench. We have our 3 kids in the back every single day and also typically have the dog in the cargo area. Having the third row up is the exception rather than the rule. I hate needing to rely on the third row.

We ski every weekend in the winter. Again, kids in the second row, ski gear in the back.

While the captains chairs may provide some comfort/access I’ll take the versatility of the bench any day.

We have two kiddos in car seats and went with SWB Navi with bench seat. I’m curious to see how the new sliding seat allows for access to the 3rd row because we will carry adults in the back when the in-laws are in town.

Thanks for your thoughts. SWB or LWB?

Yes, I’m curious about that too. From the videos I’ve seen it looks really easy to use. For us the question will be whether it’s so easy to operate that a 5 year old can do it by himself. If he can then I’d lean towards the bench, if he can’t then definitely captains seats with the LWB (Max) for me.
