Sorry,my bad. Even worse that it's a 5.4l.. As long as the body isn't rusted out like we get up here in the northeast,then it's all worthwhile. Keeps us posted. I'm super stoked that it's a busted spring. Can't wait to find out. No pressure...Haahaha. Good luck girl,make us proud.

That’s why I was excited to get it-it’s from Arizona. It’s a rare find around here to find something old (even not so old) that’s isn’t full of rust holes.

I didn’t have any luck getting the last bolt out last night, but I did break it free. That one is completely out of sight. It’s all by feel with not much room for my hand plus a wrench. I’ll get it eventually!!

I did a clutch job on a car in my garage years back, can't remember the model. Their were a couple of bolts that were so tough to get in/out, that I had to use a socket with swivel extension and a long extension, about 30 inches, and do it by feel. And this was a vehicle from the 80's. They keep getting tighter each year. You'd think with all the length and width of the Expeditions/Navigators, they could have made parts fit easier. Oh yeah, I also have 2 flexible magnets in my tool box. I like the idea of shoving a magnet inside a hose though.

That sounds about like the setup I am using!! I hate having to use swivels. It’s hard to keep the socket on the bolt squarely. That’s why I was able to break it free (after breaking the end off a wobble extension) but didn’t get it out yet.

I thought the same thing about the Navigators and Expeditions....they are such nice big vehicles-why do they have to shove the motor back so far?!

I liked the magnet hose idea too. I had to google rare earth magnet-never heard of them. I have ordered some to shove in some hose to have on hand.

The only thing my untrained eye noticed is what I tried to capture in this pic. To the bottom left of #8 (looking at it from the fender), I noticed something that looked like it used to have something attached to it like all the others. Am I right? Is this bad? Please tell me it’s not real bad!! The springs looked OK to me. Would it be very obvious if a spring was bad? I mean, none looked broken from what o could see.

Maybe a unseated Cam follower. However, it would be laying somewhere and you would see it. Its not #8. It could be stuck near the valve spring and holding it open. Your arrow is pointing to a lash adjuster.

If that roller follower isn't in the cylinder head somewhere, that means someone else has been in there in the past and removed it for whatever reason.

I would inspect the cam for that valve looking for grooves, chips and cracks along the surface. If any are found the cam should be replaced. If you just install a new roller follower the cam would slowly grenade over time.

If there isn't any damage then you can replace the roller follower. Use assembly lube and coat the contact surfaces prior to assembly.

Found a loose part!! I’ll have a closer look tomorrow to make sure I don’t see any damage. Is there a piece that was on this that I still need to find? I think it is supposed to look like the pic I found from a search-so I assume a piece broke off of it and that is why it came loose?

They held on by pressure only, no fasteners. If the top end is starved of oil, too heavy oil is used or over reved, they can come off. Was it interfering with valve on the bad cyl? Just put it back on. Make sure the roller is not damaged.

There was no compression on that cylinder.

I will check the spring and chain. I did feel the chain yesterday and it seemed tight, but I will look again.

I was wondering what would make the roller come off.

Girl, here's a great video on installing these in a later model 5.4. Probably the same with yours. It explains what this is all about. As was said, you'll want to use some heavy grease on this to protect them when the motor starts up and you want to check that valve spring to look for a break in it... A broken valve spring is one cause of them flying out. Also make sure the roller spins freely and there are no chunks out of the cam or roller. The tool is about $20 - $30 and makes the job easier by compressing the valve spring.

Do your homework if you have to replace a broken spring. There are a few tricks.
